Biography

The last name at birth of Joanna, the wife of (1) Robert Abell (about 1638 probably in Rehoboth) and (2) William Hyde (4 Jun 1667 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts[1][2]), is not yet known.

She was born about 1610-1615 in England.

She died 19 September 1682 in Norwick, New London, Connecticut.

She may be buried at Norwich First Burying Ground[3]

Children

  • Abraham,[4][5] buried on 14 November 1639[6]
  • Mary, baptised on 11 April 1642, who married the Rev. Samuel Luther[4][5][7] buried on 14 November 1639[6]
  • Preserved,[4][5] possibly born in about 1644[6]
  • Caleb,[4][5] possibly born in about 1647[6]
  • Joshua,[4][5] possibly born in about 1649[6]
  • Benjamin,[4][5] possibly born in about 1651[6]
  • Experience, possibly born in about 1660, who married John Baldwin[6][4][5]
  • another child[4][5] - papers relating to the distribution of Robert's estate refer to his oldest son, his daughter Mary, and five other children, and his son Abraham was already dead. Robert Charles Anderson suggests, based on names of grandchildren, that this may have been a daughter called Mehitable or Martha, but there is no firm evidence for this.[6]

Frances Cotton was Robert Abell's mother. I have found no evidence for Joanna's surname (as per Anderson) being Cotton or anything but Unknown. This is the best documented of the three profiles nominated for merging, but needs significant cleaning. I added two reliable sources, Anderson and an Archive.org link to the book on the Abell family that Anderson references.

This genealogy chart https://archive.org/details/abellfamilyiname00abel_0/page/39/mode/1up says in the Abell genealogy says that Joanna's will was proved in Sep 1682. Further work is needed to locate a nearer to original record of her death.

Cotton-1025 and Unknown-195638 appear to represent the same person because: There are two almost identical profiles Joannah Cotton-1025 and Joanne Hyde-1095 Same dates, same places, same first name, so probably meant to be the same person. Who? Ignoring either the birth date or the birth place, I searched for a Joann died in Norwich in the appropriate time frame. Joann _____ Abell Hyde. So Hyde-1095 was obviously meant to be this person. The connection for Cotton-1025 is the identical data to Hyde-1095 The FindA grave memorial 36039472 for Joanne ___ uses the 19 Sep 1672 death, which is wrong. Death should just be after the husband's will. PLease merge, Thank you.
