Biography

Married no later than 1639, she was in Hartford where most of her children were born before accompanying William to Middletown in 1650. While most details of her life are not known, she survived William as he provided for her in his will. She is remembered on a plaque attached to Founders Rock in Middletown commemorating the First Settlers and their wives.[1][2]

Name

Mary, last name at birth unknown. [3]

Birth

Born: About 1615. (Likely between 1610 and 1620).
Estimate based on marriage by 1639 and an assumption that she was slightly younger than her husband.
Details of birth date, place and parentage unknown, presumably born in England.

Communion

Church Abstracts show 'Mary, w. W(illia)m, adm. full communion Feb 23, 1678' and led a Cornwell descendant to further research the church records and surmise that William was the only one in town whose wife was not included in church records and that all of William's children are also in church records but not Mary until her communion - it appears two days after her death if the death date is correct. Notation Source is pg. 157 of Church Abstracts Index, Original at Vol. 1, pg 13.

NOTE: this record far more likely refers to the next generation. William Cornwell "Jr" married Mary Bull in early 1670s. It is more likely HIS wife who joined the church in 1678.

Marriage

Married to William Cornwall as his second wife, b. May 25, 1609 d. February 21, 1677/78 by 1639, probably in Hartford.[4][5]

Notes

Indian princess? The story that her identity is “Mary Hyanno,” a supposed Indian princess was started in the late 1990s with the publication of a CD-Rom of compiled genealogical information, Family Archive CD-100: 1500-1990 Family Pedigrees by United Ancestries, a now-defunct company. This identity is totally unsupported by any original sources despite diligent research by qualified genealogists. See The Middler, Newsletter of the Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants, Vol 6 No.1, Spring 2006 by Editor R. W Bacon for an in depth discussion of this topic. Thanks, Dona. While you're checking, could you check this Virginia death location ? That looks wrong.

I changed her back to Mary Unknown, project-protected her, and added a merge warning at the top of the narrative.

Ooops! Someone incorrectly merged Mary Unknown with Mary Bull. Mary Bull was the wife of the SON of William.
