Biography

Patience Unknown[1]

Disputed Origin

We do not have record of her birth, and we do not know her parents.[1][2][3] Patience was born about 1675.

She is often reported to be a sister, or the twin sister, of William Brewster's first wife, Elizabeth Read. This is unlikely; she is not recorded as a daughter of Josiah Read (all his children's births were recorded at Norwich or Lebanon), and it was both unlawful and a sin to marry a deceased wife's sister in colonial Massachusetts.[4]

Birth date is a guess, based on the birth date of her husband.

Family

Patience married c. 1694, as his 2nd wife, to William Brewster.[1][2] (His first wife was Elizabeth Read; she died in 1692).[2][1]

IT IS possible, and even probable, that Patience was the twin sister of Elizabeth, REGARDLESS of what the "TRIPOD" cite shows. Use your own judgment. Records, of ANY kind, are subject to human error!

Patience was probably the mother of all five children (Elizabeth died only 2 months after their marriage).[1] William removed from Norwich to Lebanon where two of his children's births were recorded.[2] We have only marriage and/or death dates for the first three children (any birth dates shown for them are guesses).[2]

William Brustar/Brewster of Mansfield, who was the eldest, is sometimes reported as the child of William and Elizabeth, but this is without proof:[2] We know only that he was married December 13, 1716.[2] Patience was recorded as the mother of Ebenezer and Peter.

Children of William (from the settlement of his estate in April 1729):[2]

  1. William Brustar/Brewster of Mansfield, eldest son; mar Dec 13, 1716 to Mehitable Abel
  2. Patience Brewster; mar c. 1721 to Matthew DeWolfe of Bolton
  3. Samuel Brustar/Brewster d 1776; mar Nov 30, 1726 to Tabitha Baldwin
  4. Ebenezer Brewster b 1 Feb 1702 Lebanon[5]; mar Nov 18, 1721 to Elizabeth DeWolf
  5. Peter Brewster b 17 Feb 1706 Lebanon[6], d Jan 27, 1802; mar 1) Feb 18, 1730 to Mary Lee, 2) Marion Unknown

Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut

William removed from Norwich to Lebanon where two of his children's births were recorded.[2] We only have marriage and/or death dates for the first three children, as their births were not recorded.[2]

Death and Legacy

Patience died c. 1740 in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut.[2] William Brewster died August 11, 1728 at Lebanon, Windham (now New London) County, Connecticut.

Ancestor of noted actress and activist Ashley Judd, through her father.[7]

Research Notes

As above, the parents and maiden name for Patience are unknown. Unfortunately, there is a FindaGrave memorial (apparently for her) which assumes her maiden name was White.[8] The memorial does not include any source.

Unknown-311386 and White-34427 appear to represent the same person because: I know one of the profiles has the maiden name "White" but this appears to only be based on a Find A Grave page. I believe these profiles should be merged, keeping the maiden name "Unknown." This should bring the five children together under the same two parents.

Reed-9891 and Unknown-311386 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth, death, marriage. We do not know the last name at birth for Patience (see bio).

Please approve if you agree. Thanks!

There is a difference between user-submitted Pedigree Resource Files (which offer no evidence or sources) and peer-reviewed journals, NEHGR or Connecticut Nutmegger.

Please see the WikiTree page on Sources, (especially click the links at the top of the page). As it says, "genealogy without sources is mythology"

Thanks!

"Family Research.org", "Pedigree Resource File", shows ONE file for Elizabeth Reed, Born Sept. 1672, Died 11 Mar. 1692, Married William Brewster Jan. 1692, NO children.

The same file shows EIGHT files for a Patience Reed, All show the birth date as Sept.1672, ONLY one shows a death date of 11 Mar.1692, the other SEVEN show a death date of 11 Mar. 1740 and a variation of children, ALL show a marriage date of, 8 June 1692. TWO files show the actual Five children, of William and Patience. The parents for BOTH Elizabeth and Patience are shown as Josiah Reed and Grace Holloway. If ONE of the leading, IF NOT THE leading search engines available for research, has this kind of variation of information, isn't it possible to give the benefit of doubt, if not then what?

Given ALL the other misstatements on other sites concerning this couple, I think it's safe to say that Patience IS the mother of ALL five children, given their birth years and Elizabeth's death year and Patience's time line! NO matter what her last name is, Reed/Read/Reade!

Please change her name back to Unknown. We do not know her origin (and there is absolutely no reason to believe her last name at birth was Reed/Read/Reade)

I think I see the problem and may have found the solution?

A cite on the internet, www.jfredpeterson.com/tree/g10read,htm, by a 10th generation Read, shows William marrying a daughter of Josiah and Grace, named Elizabeth, the years seem right and I found a reference to Elizabeth, on Ancestry.com, that shows her middle name to be "Patience", could this be the solution to the mystery of William & "Patience"? Let me know if this helps! Thank You

Patience was not a Reed; we do not know her maiden name, and so her last name at birth on WikiTree probably should be changed to Unknown (something the manager needs to do).

also, the marriage date for William and Patience Unknown is not known. Please see http://members.tripod.com/genealogy_2/id8.html

If I can help in any way, please let me know. Thank you!
