CAUTION - QUESTIONABLE EXISTENCE
Walter was listed as one of the children of William Varney and his wife Bridget by Raymon Meyers Tingley in the early to mid-930s.[2] Tingley gives no sources and his work is considered, at best, incompetent and unreliable unless supported by references to other more reliable sources, particularly original records.
Tingley gives Walter a birth date of 20 July 1635, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, research in original records suggests that William and Bridget Varney and their family did not arrive in Ipswich until about 1648 or 1649,[3] so that Walter could not have been born there.
A more recent account of the Varney family history omits Walter as a child of William and Bridget, but suggests that their children were born in Barbados, based on the assumption that Bridget was the widow Parsons.[4] The assumption that Bridget was the widow Parsons has long since been disproven, and there is no evidence that the Varney family ever lived in Barbados.[5]
William Varney and his wife were known to have three sons (Humphrey, Thomas, a son whose name is Unknown and who was born about 1633) and one daughter (Rachel). There is no evidence that they had a son named Walter, or that a Walter Varney ever even existed.
Unfortunately, any number of individuals have continued to report Walter Varney as a child of William and Bridget, without documentation and often without attribution.[6][7] Until such time as an actual record, an original source, is found to prove otherwise, Walter's existence remains open to question.
