Biography

Richard Nathaniel Venable and his wife, Mary Morton, had several children. Their son Richard (1806-1844) married Magdelena McCampbell and the two named their son Richard Morton Venable (1839-1910). Richard Morton Venable graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1857. He became a Major in the Confederate Army and a trustee of the college, and the dormitory called Venable Hall is named in his honor.

His education was received from Princeton and William & Mary Law School. He was interested in agricultural improvements, canals, railroads and education. His marriage to Mary Morton on 3/5/1797 led to the bearing of numerous children to include; Betsey, Martha Watkins, Richard, William Henry, Frances Anderson, Elizabeth Woodson & Mary. During his life, he served as a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, and as a State Senator and member of the Convention of 1829. Supposedly his death in 1838 was caused by heart failure as he was found face down in only 2 inches of water near "Slate Hill".
