Biography

The exact birthdate of John Wake, 1st Lord Wake, is unknown. He was the eldest son and heir of Sir Baldwin Wake, Knt., and his second wife Hawise de Quincy.[1]

He came of age in 1290.[2] He was the first of his line to be recognized as a peer, "Lord Wake" in 1299.[3]

Marriage and Children

John married, about 1286, Joan de Fiennes, the daughter of William de Fiennes and Blanche de Brienne.[1] There were at least three children from this marriage:

  1. Thomas Wake, 2nd Lord Wake; m. bef 9 Oct 1316 Blanche of Lancaster;[1] d. 30 May 1349[1]
  2. John Wake; d. osp 30 May 1349[1]
  3. Margaret Wake, M(1) John Comyn;[1] m(2) Edmund of Woodstock, earl of Kent[1]

Death

John Wake, 1st Lord Wake, died soon before 10 April 1300.[1]

On 8 September 1304, at the instance of Margaret the Queen, Joan, late the wife of John Wake was granted for the term of her life a weekly market on Wednesday at her manor of East Deping co Lincoln, and a yearly fair there.[4]
