Biography

The following, slightly reformatted to improve readability, is from Byberry Waltons (Norman Walton Swayne, 1958), pgs 23-26:

33 ISAAC WALTON (3), born 4.7.1692, died 1755, probably in July or August, son of 5 William Walton & Sarah Howell of Byberry Twp, Phila. Co., Pa., married 1st just before 12th mo 22nd 1713, when report of it was made in Abington Mtg, Mary Parry, born in Wales, daughter of Thomas Parry & Elinor Edward, married 2nd after 5.29.1728, just before 6th mo 26th, 1728, when report of it was made in the same meeting, Sarah Kennet, married 3rd Aug. 36 [sic], 1737 at Gloucester, N. J. by J. A. Hinchman, Sarah Holt, who survived him at least until 1767, and probably died 10.15.1795 aged 80. The New Jersey license for the 3rd marriage was dated Aug. 25, 1737, for Isaac Walton of Phila. and Sarah Holt of Bucks Co. The will of Joshua Holt of Phila. Co., drawn and proved in 1761, named daughter Sarah Walton and granddaughter Sarah Walton.

In Abington Mtg 10.26.1737 "Isaac Walton produc'd a written acknowledgment & Condemnation of his being too early & indecently familiar with her who is now his wife before they were married &c, the wch is Recd, provided his life & Conversation be agreeable for future." This is supposed in the Warren S. Ely Ms to refer to 64 Isaac. However, that Isaac and his wife passed Abington Mtg and their marriage was 1st mo 29th 1736 reported orderly. The time better fits 33 Isaac and gives the idea Sarah Holt may have been a domestic in his house after the death of his 2nd wife. Abington Mtg 1st mo 27th 1755 says Horsham complains of Isaac Walton Senr for drinking to excess. This was denied by Isaac, but several months later a committee appointed to get evidence reported that Isaac certainly was guilty of drinking immoderately. Thereupon the meeting took steps to disown him, but he may have died a member, for minutes of 8th mo 25th 1755 state that the Friends appointed to serve Isaac with a copy of the Testification against him reported that Isaac had deceased before they had the opportunity.

Letters in his estate were granted to the widow Sarah in Phila. Aug. 12, 1755. The Gilbert Cope Collection says the inventory 8.19.1755 amounted to 159 pounds 17s 8d, not including real estate. Cope, apparently in ignorance of the 3rd wife, and believing the widow was the 2nd, makes the comment the name Kennet has not otherwise been found in Phila. Co., and suggests the Sarah Kennet who married Isaac was a widow. June 9, 1764 in Phila. Orphans Court Sarah Walton admr of Isaac late of the Mannor of Mooreland who died about eight years ago intestate, possessed of a small personal estate and a tract of ten acres in Mooreland, prayed for an order of sale on the ground the estate was now indebted to her for maintenance and bringing up of Isaac's six children, and other expenses, in the sum of 454 pounds, and that his personal estate was appraised at 159 pounds. Sep. 8, 1764 auditors appointed to determine her claim reported the estate still owed her 97 pounds and thought the whole estate not more than sufficient to pay that. The court then issued an order of sale. March 18, 1765 Sarah reported she had sold the ten acres Oct. 13 last to Samuel Shoemaker, Mason, for 88 pounds. The deed dated Oct. 15 was exhibited and confirmed.

In 1765 Horsham Mtg complained of Sarah on account of debt, and in 1766 for suing two Friends at law. She seems to have satisfied her creditor, and in 1767 produced at Abington Mtg a paper of acknowledgment for suing a Friend at Law, which was accepted. In 1773 and again in 1774 Horsham Mtg requested three pounds a year toward support of Sarah Walton, possibly this one. Abington Mtg granted both requests, also one in 1782 for three pounds lOs for relief of Sarah Walton a poor Friend, and one in 1793 for this meeting's quota of seven pounds one shilling for support of Sarah Walton. 27th of 1st mo 1794 the Friend who had the care of Sarah Walton having died Joseph Tyson was appointed in his stead. Horsham Mtg records the death of Sarah Walton 10.15.1795 aged 80.

In 1753 Isaac Walton and Daniel Walton son of Benjamin were two of five trustees to whom Thomas Walmsley deeded a lot of 1600 square feets (sic) at the SE corner of Byberry Mtg House, for his good will and affection towards the Quakers of Byberry and one shilling. Jan. 21, 1715 Isaac was deeded 200 acres by his parents. This lay along York Road, about the full length of the later town of Hatboro, Montgomery Co., Pa., on both sides of its main street. The 100 acres Isaac's father bought from Thomas Fairman and willed to son William descended to Isaac as eldest brother after William died intestate without issue. A patent to 150 acres in Bybury was granted to Isaac in 1746. March 11, 1739 he bought from Hannah Harrison of Great Britain, daughter of a daughter of Nicholas Moore, 44 acres in Mooreland Twp on York Road, next to Isaac's other land. Perhaps he owned still other tracts.

By the time of his death all had been sold except the ten acres on which he lived, at the west point of his first 200 acres. Most of the deeds in which Isaac was grantor seem to have escaped recording, but in several cases evidence has been found in later deeds and in mortgages. March 10, 1719 he sold John Dawson l5½ acres at the north corner of the 200 acres along York Road. Dawson was the hat maker, whose business gave the town its name. Isaac deeded Emanuel Dungworth two acres of the same, on Horsham Road. About 1730 Sampson Davis got ten acres at the NE end of the 200 acres next Dawson, presumably from Isaac. Dr. John Crosley got two acres from Isaac about 1735 next to both Dawson and Davis, and later he got the adjoining ten acres from Isaac. Isaac's brother Jeremiah lived on a ten acres lot at the SE corner of the 200 acres, which Isaac may have deeded to him. At any rate, Isaac confirmed this to Jeremiah's widow Elizabeth. About 1741 Isaac got rid of all his remaining land on the SE of York Road from Byberry Road to Cemetery Ave., the above ten acres to Crosley, five acres to Thomas Potts and 20 acres, later called 23½, to Margaret Loofbourrow. Also he sold Thomas Potts 45 acres west of Cemetery Ave.

Isaac then moved to his place in Byberry Twp, but returned in 1748 when he exchanged his Byberry property with brother in law Thomas Mardon for part of the former Thompson tract between Horsham Road and Mill Road, west of Isaac's remaining York Road property. The double deed for this exchange may be summed up as follows: 31 Oct. 1748 Isaac Walton of Mannor of Moreland, Phila. Co., Yeoman, & wife Sarah and Sarah Walton widow of William Walton of same, to Thomas Mardon of Biberry Twp, Taylor, for five shillings, 111 acres in Biberry, beginning at a corner of other land of Isaac Walton, SE by S along the Road to Byberry Mtg House 114½ perches to a stone in the middle of another Great Road, SW by W 73½ perches to a corner of Benjamin Walton, by same NW by N 25l¼ perches to a post in Mooreland line, along said line NE 67½ perches, by said Isaac Walton SE by S 152¼ perches, NE ten perches to the beginning. The road junction apparently was Byberry Road & Bustleton Ave. This plot apparently included the 100 acres first rec'd by Isaac's father William and eleven acres of another tract, presumably that patented to Isaac 1746, probably just enough to make the area equal to what Isaac rec'd in exchange and at the same time give Mardon outlets on both roads. What Mardon gave for this and return of his five shillings was 111 acres in Moreland Twp beginning at a heap of stones in a Road dividing this from Joshua Barns, NE by Isaac Walton, Joshua Potts and Elizabeth Dungworth to a stone in another road from Dungworth's Mill to Horsham, N56ºW 40½ perches, N27°W 40½ perches to bank of Creek at head of Dam, along SW side or edge of Creek or Dam to corner of Hugh Matthews, by same, Isaac Just and Thomas Duffield SW 199 perches to a post in the first Road, along same SE 85¼ perches to the beginning. This instrument does not say how either of the exchanged tracts had been acquired. Now Isaac again had about 200 acres near York Road, but soon he sold 190 acres of it to Joshua Potts, leaving only the ten acres on Mill Road where he lived the rest of his life.

The births of Isaac's children did not get on the meeting records. The History of Byberry and Moreland says he had sons Jacob, William and Isaac, the last moved to Buckingham and was father of Jacob and Benjamin of there. However, it appears that 96 Isaac, who did move to Buckingham, was not father of either Jacob or Benjamin of there, for both were quite evidently sons of 33 Isaac. Joseph is supposed to be another son and Margaret a daughter, since she and her groom Evan Roberts passed Abington Mtg the same day as Jacob and his bride Ann Roberts and at the next meeting both marriages were reported orderly, apparently a double wedding. Names of four children of the 3rd wife are written with dates of birth on the back of the marriage certificate of Isaac & Sarah, about 1936 in possession of 2647 Mary Elizabeth Walton, great great great granddaughter. In addition to the nine children below, the first five supposed by the 1st wife, the last four known to be by the 3rd, it seems likely there were others, including at least two of the six the widow claimed she brought up:
