Biography

John Warburton was born in 1523 (on 20 January, 1539,[1] he was said to be aged 15). He was probably born at Arley, Cheshire, England,

He was the son of Piers Warburton of Arley and his wife, Elizabeth Wynnington.

An indenture made on 20 January, 1538/9, detailed a settlement by Sir Peter Warburton and his wife Elizabeth to Sir William Brereton of lands in Malpas, Duckington, Barton, Tilston, Caldecott, Shocklach, and Cuddington, Cheshire, on the marriages of:

  • William Brereton, aged 18, cousin [grandson] and heir apparent of Sir William Brereton (son of William, son of Sir William) and Jane Warburton, aged 12, daughter of Sir Peter Warburton and his wife Elizabeth; and
  • John Warburton, aged 15, son and heir of Sir Peter Warburton and his wife Elizabeth, and Mary Brereton, aged 18, daughter of Sir William Brereton.[1]

John and Mary had children:

  1. Peter Warburton of Arley, esq, eldest son;[2]
  2. George Warburton of the Lodge, esq, second son.[2] and
  3. John Warburton of Winnington, third son.[2]
  4. Elizabeth Warburton[3]

On 16 December, 1556, John Holcroft of Holcroft, Lancashire, received from John Warburton, knight the sum of £76 13s 4d, according to an indenture made between them, and £6 5s from the 'exhibitors' of his daughter, Mary Holcroft for half a year's rent.[4]

On 8 November, 1559, Sir John Holcroft of Holcroft acknowledged that he had received 250 marks from Sir John Warburton for the portion agreed to be paid by him on the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth, with William Booth, esq.[3]

On 20 July, 1560, Dame Anne Holcroft, widow of Sir John Holcroft of Holcroft, Lancashire, knight, received a receipt for £16 for the "exhibition" or preferment of Mary Warburton, her daughter. from Sir John Warburton of Arley, knight.[5]

He died on 31 Aug 1575 at Great Budworth.

On 8 September, 27 Elizabeth [1585], Peter Warburton of Arley, esq, conveyed his manors, premises and other properties to John Egerton of Oulton, Peter Warburton of the Northwich, esq, and other to the use of himself and the heirs male of his body, with contingent remainders, in default of such, to the heirs male of the body of his father, Sir John Warburton kt, deceased, of his grandfather, Sir Peter Warburton kt, deceased, of his great-grandfather, Sir John Warburton kt, the right heirs of the said Peter Warburton of Arley, for ever.[2]

By an indenture dated 10 February, 1 Charles I [1625], Peter Warburton of Arley, esq, set forth that his father, Sir John, had issue male, besides himself, George Warburton, late of the Lodge, esq, deceased, and John Warburton of Winnington. Peter having no male heir of his body, conveyed his manors, &c. to John, Peter and John Warburton, Robert Warburton and John Walthall and during the minority of Peter's infant heir male, who at that time was the infant Peter Warburton, eldest son of Peter, lately deceased, eldest son of George Warburton, late of the Lodge, esq, deceased, second son of Sir John Warburton and Peter's next younger brother, the trustee's of Peter's estate were to maintain the manors &c.[2]

1579/80-01-23: Marriage Settlement: (i) Robert Markham of Cottham esq. (ii) Dame Mary Warburton (widow of Sir John Warburton) (iii) Sir Francis Leeke, Peter Warburton of Arley, Chester, Thomas Markeham and Henry Maynwaringe of Carrinchum, Chester: on marriage of Robert, son and heir of R.M., and Anne, a daughter of Dame Mary Warburton.
