Biography

Ellen was the daughter of John Warburton, Knt., and his wife, Joan (or Jane) Stanley.[1] Her birth date is uncertain: her husband was born in about 1495,[1] so she may have been born about then or soon after. Her place of birth is unknown. Ellen was denied at least part of her inheritance when her father's mistress, Sibyl Starky, withheld deeds of lands belonging to her father.[1] Between 1518 and 1529, Jane, late the wife of John Werburton of Sutton, knight, from Cheshire, sued Sibell Starky of Stretton, single-woman, for a third of her said husband's goods and chattels 'unleafully spoyled' at Sutton, no part given to her or to Elyn and Dowse, his unmarried daughters.[2]

On 20 April, 1519, Peter Warburton, son and heir of Sir John Warburton, Sheriff of Cheshire, granted to his father, Sir John, all manors, lands, tenements, and rents in Cheshire or elsewhere possessed or seised in the right of Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Winnington, for the preferment and advancement of Peter's sisters, Blanche, Ellen, and Dowce, except for the manor of Marthall which he retained for his own use.[3]

Ellen married John Carrington, Esq., of Carrington and Ashton, Cheshire, son and heir of Andrew Carrington, Esq.[1] The date of the marriage is not known, but it was after the death of her father.[2] Ellen and John had six children:

  • John, Esq.[1]
  • Hamlet (or Hamon), Gent.,[1] bequeathed "a pece of gold" in the 1553 will of his brother John, and named as one of the executors[4]
  • George,[1] bequeathed "a pece of gold" in the 1553 will of his brother John, and named as one of the executors[4]
  • Bonaventure,[1] bequeathed "a pece of gold", and some money owed by William Ward, in the 1553 will of his brother John[4]
  • Jane, who married Edward Holland[1]
  • Margaret, who married Peter Domville[1]

Ellen's death date is not known. Her husband died in February 1547/8.[1]

Research Notes

In the Warburton pedigree in Ormerod's History of Cheshire, Ellen is named Margaret.[5] In the Visitation of Cheshire she is named as Ellin.[6]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was reviewed for the Magna Carta project by Michael Cayley on 10 July 2020.
Ellen (Warburton) Carrington does not appear in a Magna Carta trail in Douglas Richardson's 2011 Magna Carta Ancestry but Richardson has established subsequently that she is descended from Thomas Stanley and hence from Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy, and is on a trail to Gateway Ancestor Margaret Domville. See Richardson's post in this thread in soc.genealogy.medieval. She will also be descended from other Surety Barons. This trail was developed in June/July 2020 by Michael Cayley and badged 16 Jul 2020 by Thiessen-117. Details of this trail are in the Magna Carta Trails section of Margaret Domville's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Ellen is on a prospective new Magna Carta Project trail from Gateway Ancestor Margaret Domville to Surety Baron Saher de Quincy. In accordance with Magna Carta Project and WikiTree policies, I have adopted the profile on behalf of the Magna Carta Project and added the Project as one of the profile managers. Rights of existing profile managers are unaffected.

Warburton-133 and Warburton-210 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents and same husband. Both profiles are poorly sourced, but one of them puts the mother at age 9 at Ellen's birth. Please merge, and adopt the 1494/5 birth year. Thank you.

Also, there appears to be a duplicate of this profile, Margaret Ellen who also married John Carrington. Her birth year is 1495 which is more reasonable (mother giving birth at age of 24 rather than age of 9).

Would you please re-guess the birth year? In 1480, her mother would only be 9 years old. If you're going to use the parents to estimate, it's a good idea to consider the age of both parents at birth.
