Frances Ward was born on 14 February 1813 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]
She married Ezekiel Compton on 20 April 1830, Cuyahoga, Ohio.[2]
By 1850, Frances and Ezekiel Compton were living in Concord Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, along with six younger Comptons.[3]
It appears that Ezekiel was gone by 1860, when Frances and some of her children were living in Osolo Township, Elkhart County.[4]
Frances and her daughter Eliza were still in Osolo Township in 1870, without Ezekiel.[5]
By 1880, a widowed Frances was living in the home of her son George in Elkhart, along with George's wife Lizzie and son Herman. His occupation was dry goods merchant. Frances' age was given as 62.[6]
She died on 30 April 1894, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Manning, in Cleveland Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. She was 81 years old. Five children survived her: J.D., George and Mrs. A. E. Benham of Elkhart, Mrs. John Manning of Osolo Township, Elkhart County, and Gaston of Niles, Michigan. .[1][7]
She was buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Elkhart, Indiana. Seven children were added.[8]
Research Notes
The copy found of the 1860 census was very faint. A better copy should be obtained, if possible. Kimbel-162 21:35, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
The newspaper obituary is a bit confusing because it says Mrs. John Manning was both in Cleveland Township and Osolo Township. More research is needed. Kimbel-162 21:35, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
The date of Frances' death is unclear. Some sources have April 30, and others have May 1. More information is needed. Kimbel-162 21:35, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Please note that part of Niles, Michigan is in Berrien, and the remainder is in Cass County, Michigan.
