Biography

John and Sarah (Welles) Bidwell of Hartford, Connecticut, were the parents of Thomas Bidwell. Thomas's wife was Prudence, daughter of Edward Scott, of New Haven. Thomas was a merchant of Hartford, Connecticut.[1]

Sarah Welles Bidwell was born Apr., 1659 and died in 1708 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. Sarah Welles, daughter of the Hon. Thomas Welles (son of Gov. Thomas Welles) and Hannah Tuttle, was born in Apr. 1659 in Hartford, Conn. On Nov. 7, 1678 at Hartford, Sarah m. John Bidwell, Jr., son of John Bidwell and Sarah Wilcox who died intestate July 3, 1692 at Hartford. They had eight children. Sarah was still living on Nov. 20, 1707 when daughter Sarah was married by Rev. Timothy Woodbridge of Hartford to Capt. Joshua Robbins, Jr. of Wethersfield.[2]

Sarah Bidwell died around 1708. The inventory of her estate at Hartford was made Mar. 7, 1708/9 by Samuel Kellogg and Nathaniel Hooker. On Mar. 11, 1708/9,[3] Sarah's two eldest sons, John and Thomas Bidwell, were appointed administrators of their mother and father's combined estate. On Jan. 11, 1710/11 distribution of the combined estate was made: "To sons John Bidwell (eldest son), Thomas, Jonathan, David, James, to the heirs of Hannah Judd, and Sarah Robbins." The distribution identifies Hannah Judd as the deceased wife of Joseph Judd of Farmington, Conn. Sarah was buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.[4]

Research Notes

On 01 September 1692, Sarah Bidwell, widow and administratrix of the estate of John Bidwell, deceased, along with Ichabod Wells and Joseph Wells, all of Hartford, were plaintifs agains Thomas Wells of Hartford in a case aledging tresspass for his taking two and a half acres of grass and oats and refusing to let the plaintifs take the produce. The land had been part of the estate of Jonathan Wells, deceased. The plaintifs were awarded the judgment on 22 April 1693.[5]
