Biography

European Aristocracy
Sir John Wentworth was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Sir John Wentworth was the eldest son of Sir Roger Wentworth (d. 1539) of Codham Hall, Sheriff of Essex and Hertford in 1499 and Anne Tyrrell. He m. bef 1525 Anne Bettenham (d. 1575) 1s. John (d. young) and 3 da. Mary, anne and Margaret. He was bur. at Gosfield 1 Oct 1567.[1]

He had a very active diplomatic career in his earlier years. He was with his father in attendance upon King Henry VIII at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. He was twice Sheriff of the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire, in 1543-4, and 1554-5. In the year before his death he had the custody at Gosfield of the Queen's cousin, Lady Catherine Grey, Countess of Hertford, and sister of Queen Lady Jane Grey. Sir John was dead by October 1567 as is recorded by a letter from the Queen to Sir Owen Hopton to take charge of Lady Catherine Grey in consequence of the demise of Sir John Wentworth.

Sir John's Will is dated 8th October 1566.

“On his [Thomas Fynderne] death in 1523, Anne, wife of Sir Roger Wentworth, of Gosfield, succeeded to this estate. She was the daughter and heiress of Humphrey Tyrrell, Esq. of Warley, by Isabel, daughter and ultimately sole heiress, of John Helion, Esq., whose mother Alice, was one of the sisters and co-heiresses of Sir Thomas Swinbourne, and brought an immense estate to the Wentworth family. On her death, in 1534, she was succeeded by her son and heir, Sir John Wentworth, who, on his decease, in 1567, left, by his wife, daughter of John Bettenham, Esq. of Pluckley in Kent, his only surviving daughter and heiress, Anne, lady Maltravers; on whose death, in 1580, the next heir was her cousin, John Wentworth, Esq. the son of Henry, and grandson of Sir Roger Wentworth.”[2]

Sir John and his wife are interred in an altar tomb in the chancel of Gosfield Church, Essex.

John's Will probated 1567 mentions his nephews John and Henry Wentworth, sons of his late brother Henry; his nephew John Wentworth of Bocking, son of his late brother Roger; and his nephew Henry Wentworth of Bumpstead, son of his late brother John (jr.). Also, his daughter Lady Anne Maltravers. [3]
