Biography

Bluford was Cherokee.

Bluford West was born January 13, 1808 in the Cherokee Nation, [1] the son of Sarah Harlan, a Cherokee, (granddaughter of Nancy Ward), and Jacob West, a white man. He married Nancy Alberty about 1829 [2] and shortly afterwards the family emigrated to Indian Territory and settled in the Saline District. They had no children. He served as a Councilor and a judge. Bluford died in Washington, D.C. on April 2, 1845 [3] and is buried in Congressional Cemetery. [4]
