Josiah Wheeler was born on 22 October 1675 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Obadiah and Elizabeth (White) Wheeler.[1][2]
He married Martha Prescott, date and location unknown, probably the daughter of John and Sarah (Hayward) Prescott, born about 1680 based on her age at death.[2]
The couple was admitted to the Lancaster Church in Worcester County from the Concord Church on 09 April 1710.[3]
Josiah Wheeler of Lancaster, yeoman, with consent of wife Martha, deeded by mortgage to his son-in-law Edward Broughton, schoolmaster in Lancaster, and wife Martha Broughton for £60 on 27 August 1724 a parcel of land on the north side of Marlborough Road.[4] And on 25 July 1728, Josiah, with consent of his wife Martha, for £550 deeded to Edward Broughton, trader in Lancaster, an additional piece of meadow and upland of 62 acres in Lancaster.[5]
Josiah died in Bolton on 08 December 1738 in his 64th year[6] and was buried in the Lancaster Old Common Burial Ground.[7]
The will of Josiah Wheeler, [8][9] yeoman of Bolton, was dated 5 December 1738 and proved 06 February 1738/9. He named his wife Martha; daughters Martha Wilder, Experience Pollard, Thankful Fairbanks, Dinah Stearns; granddaughters Sarah, Copia and Patience Broughton. The moveables and improvements were left to his wife with permission for her to live in his house, but his real estate was to be divided among his children.
A petition to partition the property was signed on 27 March 1739 by widow Martha Wheeler, and four sons-in-law (James Wilder, husband of his eldest daughter; William Pollard, husband of the second daughter; Jonas Fairbanks, husband of the third daughter; and Benjamin Stearns, husband of the fourth daughter) and James Wilder the guardian to Sarah, Copia and Patience Broughton.[10] The partition allowed the widow her thirds and included a description of the shares allowed each of the daughters and their husbands.[11]
On 21 February 1743, a petition was granted to sell real estate from Josiah Wheeler's estate on behalf of Thomas White and his wife Sarah, formerly Broughton, and James Wilder, guardian of Copia and Patience Broughton, minors.[12]
After Josiah's death, Martha married Captain Peter Joslyn sometime after August 1739 when his previous wife deceased. Martha died on 21 May 1748 in her 69th year and was buried in Lancaster.[13][14]
