Biography

Jonathan White was born on 04 Jun 1658 in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony, and his parents were Sarah (Bassett) and Peregrine White, Sr. [1] [2] Jonathan's birth was recorded in Yarmouth: "Jonathan White the son of Perigen and Sarah White of Marchfeeld (w)as born at Marchfeeld upon the 4th day of June in the year 1658 brought to record by said Jonathan Whit this 18th of May 1700 and recorded by me John Miller, Clerk."[3]

Jonathan was in Yarmouth by 21 Oct 1677 when he testified.[1]

Jonathan White married (1) on 02 Feb 1682/83 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Plymouth Colony to Hester "Esther" Nickerson.[1][2] [4] Hester, daughter of Nicholas and Mary (___) Nickerson was born the last week of Oct 1656, in Yarmouth died there 08 Feb 1702/3. 14 May 1706 an agreement was made between the children of Mary Nickerson, late of Yarmouth, widow, deceased, and Jonathan White who had married one of Mary's daughters.[1]

He married (2) Elizabeth ______. She died Yarmouth 12 April 1718. "wife of Jonathan White"[1]

  • Disputed Information He did not marry Margaret Elizabeth Alexander. The Mayflower Society does not recognize the commonly asserted marriage of Jonathan White to Margaret Elizabeth Alexander[1] Her existence is unsupported by any primary sources, and she is most likely fictional. Please do not add her as a spouse to this profile, or her supposed children: Alexander and Margaret. Her origins are traced to a 1939 genealogy by Roscoe White,[5] whose Mayflower application cited an 1870 family bible.[1] For a more detailed explanation see Parents of Alexander White..

Jonathan died between 14 July 1736 (will) and 22 Feb 1737 (probate) in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay.[1]

Jonathan White of Yarmouth, yeoman, made his will on 14 July 1736, presented 22 February 1737, in which he named his eldest son Jonathan, third son Joseph, son Ebenezer, daughter Elizabeth White (land for her use in "single state which upon her marriage or death shall be to my son Joseph..."), daughter Esther Drake, daughter Sarah White, daughter Mary Russell, grandson Jonathan Dell, a minor. Son Joseph White to be sole executor. Witnesses were John Jones, John Eldreg and Thomas Smith. A release was dated 14 November 1741 by John Arnold, administrator on the estate of Esther Drake deceased and guardian to Frances Drake, her heir. On 24 February 1741, another release was signed by Ebenezer White for his share of the moveable estate of his father.[6][7][1]

White-63751 and White-2097 appear to represent the same person because: These Jonathan Whites (no Bassett) have the same dates. Non Child William b. in Va was removed. Fictional wife Margaret Alexander (fraud created) will be removed.

This Jonathan White (1658-17370 did not marry the fictional Mary Margaret Elizabeth (Margaret) Alexander. Please read the information on her profile. She will be disconnected so that this profile can be merged with White-2097. Further this Jonathan did not have a son William. Please see children listed on White-2097. William White needs to be disconnected as the son of both these parents.

The messages on White-2062 are pretty clear that he wasn't the son of Jonathan White (1658-1737) and that Jonathan's alleged wife Mary Margaret Elizabeth (Alexander) is fictional. I am taking them all apart again and proposing a merge of your newly created Jonathan with the older profile.

I feel quite certain he does not have a middle name of Bassett. Removing said middle name.

Somehow after we had the wife right (ie. Unknown) she's gotten merged back into the fictional Marg. Eliz. Alexander. I will create a new Eliz. Unknown, to merge.

Yes that is the same Jonathan but the Mayflower Society accepts that he had a second wife Elizabeth, who died that day. What it doesn't accept is that her maiden name was Alexander and that they had two children.

I found this reference from the Massachusetts, Town and Vital records linking a Jonathon to an Elizabeth (?Margaret Elizabeth Alexander) as a wife of Jonathon. Could this possibly be the same Jonathon? https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/tree/39362492/person/28677740625/media/0dd354c9-decb-42b5-9ba4-6d4442be2b68?_phsrc=ODw723&_phstart=successSource

White-47028 and White-2097 appear to represent the same person because: I totally understand that there is a controversy about the existence, however that does not affect the need for duplicate profiles describing the same individual need to be merged. Right now there are 3 profile copies. Once the merge has been done, then it will be clear if any spouses and/or children will also need to be merged. Once all the profiles have been cleaned up, THEN it can be decided what you want to do about the controversial existence of the ONE profile left over. Thanks for your co-operation in cleaning up the wikitree database of any duplicate profiles.

White-41244 and White-2097 do not represent the same person because: Per Mayflower Families Through Five Generations (William White family) Vol. 17 p. 16-17 Jonathan White (White-2097) never had a son named Alexander. Jonathan's 7 children were Elizabeth, Esther, Sarah, Jonathan, Ebenezer, Joseph and Mary.

Vol. 17 p. 17 does note a bogus White genealogy of the 1930's in in which is mentioned an Alexander White b. 8 Sept. 1709. There are many notes in the profile of White-2097 regarding this fictional White family and to be aware of it. The Mayflower Society does not accept that lineage.

White-35154 and White-2097 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate (White-35154 had previously been attached to the incorrect mother, but that has been fixed)

White-38854 and White-2097 do not represent the same person because: This match is rejected due to the fact that long ago the Mayflower Society determined that Margaret Alexander and son Alexander were bogus based on an unapproved 1930s White genealogy. See numerous notes on the profile of White-2097 and Mayflower Families William White silver book Vol. 13 p. 17.

White-39267 and White-2097 appear to represent the same person because: same birthplace and date, same father, same spouse, son Jonathan on both profiles. Please merge.

Can you provide a source for the mother shown on this profile? The source shown indicates https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bassett-176, a different woman.
