On 1 May 1790, in Duplin County, he married Mary Graddy, daughter of William and Elizabeth Graddy.[2][3] They had eleven known children (list shown in Last Will order, not necessarily in birth order).
In the 1790 U.S. Census, Joseph was enumerated in Duplin County as head of a four person household which included his wife Mary and two slaves.[4] By the 1800 U.S. Census, Joseph and Mary were the parents of six sons and two daughters, all under the age of 10, living in Duplin County.[5] By the 1810 U.S. Census, Joseph and Mary were recorded in Duplin County with six males and four females, conjectured to be their children. [5]
In the 1820 U.S. Census, Joseph was enumerated as head of a 9 person household in Duplin County, North Carolina. [6] In the 1830 U.S. Census, Joseph was enumerated as head of a 16 person household. His son Joseph was recorded the line above his entry.
