Biography

Morgan ap William was the son of William ap Ieuan. He was born about 1470 in Llanishen, Glamorgan[1]. (His mother was NOT the illegitimate daughter of Jasper Tudor.)

Together with his brother, John, he moved to England after the triumph of Henry VII. They anglicized their name to Williams[1]. Morgan was an aspiring lawyer. He settled at Putney where his cousin, John Williams, was steward of the manor.

Morgan married Katherine Cromwell, the eldest child of Walter Cromwell in about 1495-1500[1]. They had three children, Elizabeth, Richard and Walter by about 1510.

It seems likely that Morgan worked as a lawyer and scrivener while Katherine ran the alehouse supplied by her father's brewery[2].

In 1512[3] and 1514[4], Morgan was involved in court cases in London recovering moneys owed to him.

Morgan's will is dated 15 May 1516[5] and presumably he died shortly thereafter. His son, Richard, then aged about five, moved in with his uncle, Thomas Cromwell[2] and eventually took that name as his own.

I will revert the profile back until the explanation information is added. John, if you have some reason and sources to prove that Joan Tudor was Morgan's mother and that she was the the illegitimate daughter of Jasper could you please add them here to help prove or disprove this relationship.

I very much doubt these are the same people - there is a huge difference in birth dates and location. One is Welsh the other from London. Morgan Williams is a very common name in Wales! I suspect that there is a lot of assumption in the tree of the one that has linked him to the same parents as the other. Having a half brother with the same name in both cases could make one the half brother of the other too.
Williams-1943 and Williams-983 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, same father, same brothers. Birthdate does not match but both are probably incorrect

What evidence is there that Morgan Williams should have Cromwell as his LNAB? His son Richard used the alias Cromwell but did Morgan?

Also the parentage here is very questionable.

Berry's Herts Pedigrees, p. 106. Fake pedigree from heraldic sources.

Calls him Morgan Tudor by mistake.

Omits to mention his royal mother.
