Biography

Asa was born in April 1806 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was the son of William Womack and Lucinda Womack.

Asa left North Carolina with his parents, William and Lucinda Womack, after 1810 for Marion County, Tennessee.

He married Sarah Patton in 1826. [1][2] Together they had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth Jane Womack
  2. Jesse Marion Womack [1]
  3. Florinda Isabelle (Womack) Brown [1]
  4. John Alexander Womack [1]
  5. Martha Frances Womack [1][2]
  6. Mary Emeline Womack [1][2]
  7. William Edward Womack [1][2]
  8. James Knox Polk Womack [1][2]
  9. Riley Patton Womack [1][2]
  10. Simpson Parks Womack [1][2]
  11. Sallie Ann Wormark [2]

About 1830 he and his family moved to Alabama, first Jackson County and then Benton County (became Calhoun County in 1858). By 1845, Asa and family had removed to Yalobusha County, Mississippi where they remained.

Five sons of Asa and Sarah served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Only one came home. Jesse M. died in a prisoner of war camp in Illinois in 1864; William E. and his brother James were both killed in the Battle of Fishing Creek (aka Battle of Logan's Cross Roads or Battle of Mill Springs), Pulaski County, KY in 1862; Riley was killed in Georgia in 1864. John A. Womack came home. He later erected a monument to his four brothers at Shiloh Cemetery, Yalobusha County, Mississippi.

He passed away in March 1863 in Yalobusha County, Mississippi and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Yalobusha County. Both Asa and Sarah died in 1863 before the war ended. They may have known of the deaths of two of their sons, William and James, before they died.
