Biography

John was born about 1650. He passed away about 1722.

"Woodlief Family: Colonial Virginia" collected by Elizabeth Anne Kerman Taylor and updated by Anne Woodlief.

John Woodliffe III (ca. 1650-1738) and Mary Wynne (after 1650-after 1707)

John III was called Pastor in Prince George Co VA. His cattle mark was "one smooth cropps on each ear and half moon under left ear" (1689). In 1704, a John Woodlife Sr. is recorded as having 644 acres, John Jr. with 750, and Elizabeth Woodlife had 844 acres.(widow of George above). His will was proven by his son John 11 July 1738. Mary was the daughter of Col. Robert Wynne (1622-1678) and Mary Frances Sloman [m.1 to Francis Poythress] Robert Wynne (arrived in 1651) had a 600-acre plantation south of the James named Georges. (12 headrights). He was granted to keep two Indians for service. He was Speaker of the House of Burgesses during the Long Parliament, 1662-1674 and lived in Jordans Parish, Charles City County and owned much property in England (5 houses, a farm, and a mill). In his will, 7/1/1675, Robert Wynne left land in England to eldest son and his plantation to Joshua; he left daughter Woodlief a servant of four years and left grandson and godson George Woodlief one filly foal.

There seem to be some issues here. According to linkages, this John (John III) is a half-brother of Edward; both of them sons of Capt. John Woodlief Jr.

John III has a different mother than Edward. Edward was born 22 years later. This alone is not shocking, as it would appear that the father married Edward's mother (Mary Wynne) at about the age of 56 (when she would have been 16). Possible, but maybe deserves a closer look. A bigger issue is John III's mother: Frances Reid (1720-1800). Either her dates are wrong, or she cannot possibly be his mother, nor the wife of Capt. John jr., as she was born after Capt. John Jr. died and was only 2 when her "son" John III was born. This is obviously wrong. Also suspicious is that John III's wife is named Mary Wynn, basically the same name as his father's 2nd wife Mary Wynne. FamilySearch has it differently: John Woodlief Sr. 1584 - 1637 & Mary Archard 1587 - 1620 --> John Woodlief Jr. 1609 - 1676 & Anne Powell 1607 - ???? --> John Woodlief (III) 1652 - 1719 & Hannah Mary Caufield 1655 - 1722 (shown as daughter of Robert Wynne & Mary Frances Sloman...confusing) --> Edward Woodlief 1670 - 1719 & Sarah Poland (Pollard?) 1670 - 1718 (shown as daughter of John Eaton & Mary Mcintosh...also confusing)

The FamilySearch timelines look more realistic, though I have seen sources that indicate the John Jr (who presumably died in Bacon's Rebellion) was father of Edward as WikiTree shows.

I think both this tree and the FamilySearch tree have issues. I am going to continue digging, but any help to straighten this out is appreciated. My opinion currently is that WikiTree is most likely correct (per sources I have read) regarding John Sr. -> John Jr. -> Edward. It is possible that Edward had a brother John, also as WikiTree shows. But WikiTree is obviously wrong on the details of John III's mother and wife.
