John Woodson IV was born about 1706 in Henrico county, Colony of Virginia, son of Benjamin Woodson (1666 - 1723) and Sarah (Porter) Woodson (~1668 - 1723).
John married Mary Susan Miller (~1710 - 1775) on 10 August 1731 in Lancaster county, Colony of Virginia[1][2][3]. Their children were:
John died about 1790 in Goochland, Virginia, United States aged ~84.

Know all men by these presents that we, John Woodson, of the county of Goochland, and William Miller of the county of Lancaster, are held and firmly bound unto our Sovereign Lord, King George ye second, in ye sum of fifty pounds, current money of Virginia, to be paid to our s’d Sovreign Lord, his heirs or successors; to ye w’ch Payment, wel and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, Ex’ors and Adm’rs jointly and severally firmly by these presents. Dated this Tenth day of August 1731.
The condition of this obligation is such that, whereas there is a License desired for a marriage Intended between the above bound John Woodson, and Mary Miller of ye county of Lancaster aforesaid. If, therefore, there is no Lawful cause to Obstruct the s’d marriage, then this obligation to be void; otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Captain Woodson of the Virginia Regiment, the Sandy Creel Expedition against the Shawnees in the Ohio Valley, 1759, under the Command of Major Andrew Lewis.
John Woodson, Gent. served in the Virginia Colonial Militia rising to the rank of Colonel well before the Revolutionary War. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, due to his age and infirmities, he resigned his Commission and recommended that it be granted to Lieut. Robert Lewis, a grandson of his previous Commanding Officer and close friend. John Woodson was then commissioned as County Lieutenant of Goochland Sept. 20 1779 and also appointed Goochland County Sheriff on 19 Oct 1776.

Roger Thompson's Co. of Minute Men Oct. 10, 1776; Appted Sheriff Oct 19, 1776; rec. as County Lieutenant of Goochland Sept. 20 1779; on same day Robert Lewis rec. as Colonel in his stead; resigned as County Lieutenant Aug. 20, 1781.
