Biography

John Woodson was born about 1695.

John Woodson was the son of John Woodson and Judith Tarleton Woodson. He was born in Henrico County, and was probably confused many times with his father and his cousins. John married Susanna Fleming Bates, the widow of John Bates, Jr. and the sister of Ursula Fleming. They were married after 1723. for John Bates died that year. Susanna and John Bates had children, but Susanna and John Woodson did not have any children.

John Woodson was a justice in Henrico County, sheriff of the county, and a major in the Goochland County militia. Susanna and John settled in Goochland County on Genita Creek and John died there in 1754. His will was presented in court on May 21, 1754 and in it he left all of his property to his wife, Susanna. His estate was valued at £392.15.5. Susanna died before November 15, 1757, when her will was recorded in Goochland County. She left her estate to her Bates children: Charles, Fleming, John, James and Hannah Bates. [1]

John's will also proves his siblings. He stated, among other things:

" Whereas John Woodson a Deceased father died possess'd of a tract of land commonly cald [sic] the Dover Tract, the which by his last Will & Testament he gave to his several Children, John, Robert, Josiah, Stephen, Judith & Elizabeth, this said tract of land being under suspicion of large Measure I was ordered to resurvey and found therein a large quantity of Surplis [sic] land by application to the Councel [sic] they granted me a pattent for the said surplis [sic] Land least any person should pretend as Heir at Law to me should claim it after my Death I give and dispose of it as Followeth. The land devised to my Brother Robert and sold by him to Coll. Thomas Randolph I give to the Heirs of Thomas Randolph according to the ancient bounds. I give to my brother Josiah's Heirs after the same manner. Item to Stephen, Judith and Elisabeth after the same manner."[2]
