Biography

Flag of Gloucestershire (adopted 2008)
Thomas Workman was born in Gloucestershire, England.

Thomas was the son of Humphrey Workman and Joan Hathaway. He was born before 1554 when he was mentioned in the will of his grandmother.[1]

On 30 Jun 1579 Thomas married Agnes Browne at Alderley, Gloucestershire. [2]Agnes was a widow, previously the wife of Edward Browne, a clothman of Hawkesbury, who had died in 1578. Agnes was pregnant at the time of his death.[3]

Their children: (births are recorded in the Alderley Parish Register):

  • Robert Workman, born 16 Oct. 1580, Alderley, but probably died in infancy as he is not mentioned in his father's will
  • Nicholas Workman, born 21 May 1583 in Alderley
  • Elizabeth Workman, born 7 April 1585 in Alderley, and mentioned in the will only as "the child which my wife now goeth with."
  • Thomas also bequeathed a legacy to his "daughter in lawe" (adopted child), Johanne Browne, dau of Edward Browne, deceased, the money to be given her when she reached the age of 21 years.

Research Notes

In his will he described Robert Hale as "father in law" - did he mean step father? He does not actually say that Robert was the father of his wife Agnes.
