Biography

ABT. 1608 Peter was about fifteen when his parents died of the plague His uncle saw that he attended the King's school in 1610. Peter then took lessons preparatory to becoming a Notary Public.

Peter Wynne became a freeman of Canterbury in 1626 by right of birth, and bore the designation of gentleman. He lived in St. Margaret's Parish. To glimpse the lives of Peter Wynne and his siblings after the deaths of their parents by The Plague, On the 4th day of August 1626 Peter Wynne, a Notary, appeared in Court and said: "That he promiseth reformation and will hereafter duly frequent his Church, and the next Sunday will, God willing, repair to Reculver Church, where he now abideth, to Divine Service, and will thereof certify to the Court within this fortnight; and promiseth further to be a partaker of the Holy Communion, either in Reculver Church or elsewhere, where he shall then make his abode between this and Michaelmas next, and accordingly thereof certify the next Court after the said Feast." (This was found in Archaelogia Cantiana: Being Transactions of the Kent Archaeological Society Volume XXV, Printed for the Society in London by Mitchell & Hughes, 1902 pg 50. The record was found in Fol. 67 regarding Reculver Parish in Visitations of the Archdeacon of Canterbury and thanks to Dorothy Tuttle). In his will written May 20, 1638, which is written in the English of King James' time, he leaves son Robert the identical parcels Robert bequeaths to his own sons 37 years later. Born: christened 11/25/1593, St. Dunstan's, Canterbury, Kent, England (Printed Register, p 12 as referred to in "Virginia Historical Genealogies" by John Bennett Boddie pg 175) Married: 12/81620, St. Martin's Parish, Canterbury, Kent, England ("Virginia Historical Genealogies", John Bennett Boddie) Died: 5/30/1638, Canterbury, Kent, England, buried St. George's Parish 5/30/1638 (St. George's Parish Register, pp183-185). Will dated 5/21/1638, St. Margaret's, Canterbury, Kent, England, proved 5/31/1638.

Peter Wynne died May 1638.[1]

Names wife Martha and son Robert (who had no heirs at the time). Peter's will named as heir, if Robert had no heirs, and "Martha my wife have no other child by me begotten, then I give and bequeath unto Christopher May sonne of Sarah May, late of the cittie of Canterbury, deceased... Also I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth May one other of the children of the said Paul May...." He also names sister Anne, wife of Roger Pey, and says that the two children of Paul May should pay Anne 10 pounds (Christopher to pay 4 pounds and Elizabeth to pay 6 pounds).

This argues that they (Christopher and Elizabeth) are children of his sister Elizabeth, who Randall Scott Treadway shows as married to Paul May. But the will says "Christopher May sonne of Sarah May...deceased" & that maybe Christopher is the son of Peter Wynne's daughter Sarah and step-brother of Elizabeth May (daughter of Paul May and Peter Wynne's sister Elizabeth). This would explain "sonne of Sarah" and listing him first (before Elizabeth May) and with a smaller share of the 10 pounds. Although if he (Christopher) were Peter Wynne's grandson, you would think that Peter would name him so. Noland-165 11:23, 24 May 2016 (EDT)

Was this Captain Peter Winn (Wynne) who came on the 2nd supply to Jamestown?
I am confused by the profiles for John, Thomas and Minor Wynne being attached as children of Peter? His will only names Robert who has no heirs at the time. Please research and disconnect them. Thanks, Mary
