Arthur, born about 1835, was the son of Arthur Armstrong, who had emigrated with his family to Upper Canada from Ireland in 1836. Arthur Jr. attended Upper Canada College and succeeded his father in 1859 as Clerk of the Division Court in York County.
In 1865 Arthur married Mary B. Bosworth, the daughter of Dr. Alfred Bosworth and his wife Sarah.[1] In 1871 they lived in the hamlet of Lloydtown, King Township, with their two children, Alfred and Olivia, and Mary's mother. They attended the Church of England.[2] They had four children recorded in the 1881 census: Alfred, Walter, Adelaide and John. (Olivia may have died prior to the census.)[3]
After Mary's death, [4]Arthur married Esther Denison Thomson, a widow. [5][6] In 1891 they lived in the Armstrong family home, Gilnockie, in Lloydtown with Arthur's children, Adelaide, John and Violet.[7]
Arthur, a volunteer in the milita, served in the 12th York Rangers and was a veteran of the Fenian Raids of 1866. At his death he held the rank of major. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, serving twice as master of his lodge.[8]
In 1905, while crossing King Street in Toronto, Arthur was struck by a streetcar and later died of his injuries.[9] He left an estate valued at $35,000.[10]
