Biography

When Laura C. Culpepper-Moore was born on February 1, 1866, in McMinn, Tennessee, her father, Francis Culpepper, was 25 and her mother Polly Lemons was 20. She married James Knox Moore on December 24, 1891, in McMinn County, Tennessee. They had one child, Henry Vaughn Moore. She died on October 30, 1951, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the age of 85.

Laura's mother died during Laura's childbirth or shortly after. Her father remarried in 1867 at some point before 1870 left Laura and her older sister Mary in the care of their aunt, Harriet Lemons and move to Illinois where he died in 1897. It is unknown at this point if Harriet Lemons officially adopted them but she did raise them as her own. It is also unknown why Francis Culpepper did not raise his daughters and left them in Tennessee. He did go on to have other children with his second wife.

James and Laura Moore were listed as owning a farm in the 1900 census. Harriet Lemons Davis is living with them in this census. In the 1920 census it lists the street name as Dry Valley Road. Also on this census, next to them is James Moore's nephew John A Moore and his son George Rector Moore. John A Moore married Nancy Davis, who was Laura's cousin and Harriet's niece and step-daughter. Today in 2013 a living Moore descendant is living on the same family farm.
