Gerard Robert Ellyson's (also called "Robert") first known record appearance is Feb. 1700 when he signs a certificate of marriage at the New Kent Co. VA. Quaker Monthly Meeting. He and wife Sarah seem to have moved to Henrico Co. VA. The Chickahominy Swamp is the boundary between New Kent Co. VA. & Henrico Co. VA. Sarah Ellyson first shows in the Quaker Minutes of Henrico Co. VA. in Apr. 1703. The Quaker Minutes also show Gerard had received his father's lady slave Tamar. Gerard Robert Ellyson is credited with having 151 ac. at Chickahominy Swamp(Creek)in Henrico Co. VA. but there is evidence he had additional land. In 1702 he was one of the representatives of the Friends Virginia Yearly Meeting. The Ellysons attended both the Henrico and New Kent(Black Creek)Quaker Monthly Meetings. The Friends appointed Gerard overseer of the poor. He and Sarah also provided lodgings for traveling Friends. In 1720 he was named treasurer of the Henrico Meeting. In 1735 & 1736 Gerard helped his neighbors Giles Carter and others with property line processions. Gerard was continually fined by the Anglican State Church for refusing to pay tithes (the priest's wages). In 1734 the Quaker Minutes recorded that Gerard was "..the pillar of the church at Black Creek". The same records indicate he died in 1749 (42 years before freedom of religion). The children of Gerard Robert Ellyson, II, & wife Sarah according to the Quaker records were: 1) Robert Ellyson, md. Sarah Crew. 2) Agatha Ellyson, md. John Crew, Jr. 3) Hannah Ellyson, md. Andrew Crew. 4) William Ellyson, md. Agness Johnson. 5) Elizabeth Ellyson, md. John Johnson & moved later to Amelia Co. VA. 6) Judith Ellyson, md. James Lead. 7) Cecilia Ellyson, md. Thomas Elmore. 8) Ursulah Ellyson, md. William Ladd. The above written by Dennis Stewart(16676).
Quaker
Marriage: 28 Apr 1700, signed marriage certificate in New Kent MM, Virginia. [Possibly signing as a witness for another marriage]
His grandfather, Robert, received land for transportation of 12 persons.[1] His father, Gerrard, later received this land as his heir, and Gerrard Robert, called Robert in this record, received it in turn as his heir.[2]

Adjusting estimated birth date to accommodate for birth of (probable) eldest son, Robert, who married in 1714. No notes seen that state the marriage certificate signed by Gerrard Robert in 1700 was his own, probably he was a witness. One source states the children had been born before Gerrard and Sarah embraced the Quaker states, thus the reason their births are not found recorded in Quaker records. In any case, if Robert were born after a 1700 marriage between his parents, he could not be marrying himself at age 13 or 14 in 1714. This writer has, for the time being, estimated son Robert's birth at 1696 at the latest, based on date of his marriage, and adjusted Gerrard Robert's to accommodate that timeline. Hoping more documentation will be found to provide clarity to this timeline.
Regarding the enslaved women on this profile: The biography text mentions an enslaved woman named Tamar inherited from his father. No source is provided. Has this Tamar been confused with the Tamar born when Gerrard Robert was an old man, who was eventually given by his widow, Sarah, to their eldest son, Robert? Or are there actually two Tamars? Labeling elder and younger for now.
