About Matilda Normandy
Matilda of Flanders
Matilda was spoiled young lady by her parents, used to speaking her mind and getting her way. She also had a temper.
William wanted to marry her for many reasons, including Matilda was the 7th direct descendant of King Alfred the Great of England.
At first Pope Leo IX refused permission claiming that the couple were too closely related (cousins). Permission was finally granted in 1051. They married 1053 at the Catherine of Notre Dame at Eu, Normandy.
Matilda was crowned queen of England on May 11, 1068 but spent most of her life in France.
Matilda was 4’ 2" - shortest Queen of England. They had four sons and six daughters. She died in November 1083. William always remained faithful to her. After her death, William became tyrannical, and people blamed it on his having lost her.
