About Arthur Guinness

Arthur Guinness is best known as the founder of the Irish brewery, Guinness. Born in Celbridge in the county of Kildare (Ireland) in 1725, he first learned the art of brewery from his father Richard, whose job as a land steward, according to [Guinness Storehouse], "included brewing beer for workers on the estate of Dr. Arthur Price, later Archbishop of Cashel." Arthur signed a 9,000-year lease for the St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin when he was 34 (1759). In only 10 years, Arthur would transform this underutilized plant into a full-fledged brewery and export business. Arthur was married to Olivia Whitmore and together had 21 children (10 of whom survived into their adult years). He died in 1803 (According to Bill Yenne's book Guinness, he died at his country estate, Beaumont. (page 24)) leaving a legacy and a name that would stand the test of time.
