About Josephine Hopper
Josephine Nivison married American painter Edward Hopper in 1924; she was forty-one years old.
A painter herself, Josephine insisted that her husband have no further female models after they were married, and so was "self commissioned" to modeling for him.
She continued to draw after their marriage and sold drawings to both The New York Tribune and the Evening Post.
Her primary life's work after their marriage however, was getting Hopper's work to curators. When she took on this project, she was amazingly successful and the first painting she had sold on his behalf was only the second he had sold in 10 years. As a result of the exposure she secured for him, Hopper was given a sell-out solo show and his success would continue throughout their lives.
Many have said his most moving painting depicts both Josephine and Edward on a theater stage; Two Comedians was his last painting.
Josephine died March 6, 1968, just ten months after her husband.
