About Babe Ruth
George "Babe" Herman Ruth, Jr. was an American Major League Baseball player, who played from 1914-1935. He stands today as one of the greatest sports heroes of all times and one of the most celebrated baseball personalities. Ruth still holds several records in MLB including a .690 career slugging percentage and a 1.164 career on-base plus slugging. Ruth is attributed to bringing notoriety to the sport of baseball and gave a name to the "live-ball" era. When he was not playing baseball he was heavily involved in charitable causes and giving.
Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland to German-American parents Kate Schamberger-Ruth and George Herman Ruth, Sr. Unfortunately they were unable to give him proper care and time and placed him at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory and orphanage. At that time, they signed custody over to the Catholic missionaries who ran St. Mary's. He saw very little of his family during his time at the school. A man by the name of Brother Matthias became a father figure in Ruth's life, teaching him all about baseball.
