Biography

MARY SARAH DENNARD & WILLIAM ABBOTT FAMILY Sarah Dennard with her husband, William Abbott (b. 1740, d. ca 1819) owned a 455 acre plantation in 1803, located on Island Creek, near the town of Mayo and only a short distance from the town of Chesnee and north of Spartanburg, SC. It is believed that Sarah was a sister to Jacob, John, and William Dennard of Spartanburg. Sarah Dennard Abbott spent her later years in Oconee County and was buried at West Union, SC. William Abbott joined the South Carolina militia in 1778 to serve under Capt. James Clark and Col. Singleton and marched to Augusta. Later, he joined Gen. Marion after the Tories threatened to hang him from his door post. He served eight months and fourteen days under Capt. Armstrong and Richard Singleton. William Abbott's estate was settled in 1819 by Sarah and her children. Their children are: [1]
