Biography

City of London (historic flag)
John Abbott Esq was born in the City of London, England.

John ABBOTT Esquire[1][2][3][4] was born 1381 in Farthinghoe, England.

John married Agnes on 1411 in London, England. Agnes was born 1390 in London, England.

They had the following children:

  • Elizabeth ABBOTT[1] was born 1413 in London, England.
  • Alice ABBOTT was born 1418 and died 21 Nov 1473.

A mercer, John Abbott, on 19 June 1443, not only founded a free school, but made a city company, his own "mistere" of the mercers, trustees of it, giving them lands in London for a master to teach libere et quiete, free and quit of all charges, at Farnynghoe, now Farthinghoe in Northamptonshire. [5]

He died Feb 1443/4 in London, England.

Will

On Feb. 27,1443/4 John Abbott made his testament, dying shortly after this. The will was proved on March 5,1443/4. In it he disposed of his real estate and provided for a chantry to be established in the Farthinhoe Church and services be held there for his soul and the souls of his parents, etc. From his will we know that he originally came from Farthinghoe to London where he was a member of the church of Saint Lawrence in Old Jewry. He was probably buried in the chancel there as he requested. This ancient church was burned in the fire of 1666. He left a widow, Agnes, and two married daughters: Alice, wife of William Cotton; and Elizabeth, wife of Walter Mauntell. No sons are named. [6]
