Note of Spouses

Elizabeth Gray born 1651 in Salem daughter of Robert Gray (1620-1662) and his wife Elizabeth has been removed as a possible spouse of William Abbott as it can be established through the will of Robert Gray who died in 1662 and subsequent land transactions that Elizabeth Gray born 1651 married John Priest.

The marriage of William Abbot and Elizabeth Gary is recorded at Roxbury[1] (also noted in records at Andover) but likely occurred in Roxbury which was Elizabeth's place of birth and residence.

In addition, the identity of William's wife as Elizabeth Gary/Geary daughter of Nathaniel Geary of Roxbury is confirmed by the probate record of Nathaniel Gary of Roxbury which includes an acknowledgment on 16 April 1684 from William Abbit of Andover that he has received from the estate administrator (Anna Bishop) his full portion from the estate.[2]

A previous manager cited Ancestral File Number GD0F-3L at FamilySearch.org. The search results are linked. The number is associated with 113 user-submitted genealogies for his wife. I have not checked all of these to see if any cite more solid sources. These give her maiden name variously as Geary, Gary, or Gray. Most give her father's name as Nathaniel Gary.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

One problem with the proposal that Elizabeth Gray baptized in 1651 was the spouse of William Abbott is that William and his wife Elizabeth had children until 1706 -- not possible for a woman born in 1651. It is more likely that William's wife was Elizabeth Geary/Gary born in Roxbury in 1761. The place of marriage was in Roxbury.

Currently two different wives are listed for William Abbott: Elizabeth Gary (Gary-664) and Elizabeth Gray (Gray-11769). The dates of the marriage are the same so one of these profiles is incorrect. Because of the similarity in spelling of the last name, there have been errors in various family profiles of the families of these individuals. William's children have been found listed as children of William Abbott and wife Elizabeth, so whichever of these individuals was the wife of William would be the mother of the children. Recently a substantial secondary source of Robert Gray <https://www.google.com/books/edition/Historic_Homes_and_Places_and_Genealogic/nn1yyHiYJFYC?q=Robert++gray+1634&gbpv=1&bsq=gray#f=false> states on page 1478 "Elizabeth, baptized March 9, 1631, married William Abbott, son of George" which is a compelling argument that Gray-11769 is his wife.

Gray-11768 is likely a different person from Gray-342. The spouse and death belong to Gray-342. Records appear to conflict on which marriage date belongs here.

I believe that Abbott-5809 & Abbot-521 represent the same person and need to be merged, but first we need to determine which spelling of the last name is most accurate. The headstone of his father, George Abbot/Abbott and mother Hannah Chandler spells it Abbot (see Abbott-102).
