John ("Jack"), born in 1852 in Montreal,[1] was the eldest son of John Abbott and Mary Bethune.[2] In 1874 he graduated from McGill with a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) degree.[3] In 1881 he was working as a lawyer in Montreal.[4]
