Death of Mr. Joseph Abbott.
One of the oldest and most respected residents of Dungog in the person of Mr. Joseph Abbott, died at his residence, Dungog, last night, at the advanced age of 70 years. The deceased gentleman had not enjoyed good health for some time, and his death was not altogether unexpected. He was a native of Dungog, and one of the most prominent and popular men in the district, who took a lending part in all movements connected with the advancement of the district. He was a grazier in the district, and has also sent large drafts of cattle to Maitland yards. He was a member of the late auctioneering firm of Carlton and Abbott, president for some years of the Durham Agricultural Association, connected with the Dungog Jockey Club, a justice of the peace, and was the local agent for this journal for well nigh half a century. He was a brother of Mr. W. H. Abbott, the well-known pastoralist of Violet Hill, Dungog. He leaves a family of three sons and three daughters, with whom such sympathy will be felt in their sad bereavement.[1]
