Maria Abbott was born in Holden, Massachusetts, in 1796 and moved to Barre, Vermont with her family when she was a young girl. She married Rev. Daniel Walker in Barre in 1814. They lived in Barre until 1828. In 1828 they moved to Beaver Dam, Pennsylvania, but left there in March 1831 to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then to Grass Lake, Michigan, which was then "a wilderness frontier." In Grass Lake, her husband was the first postmaster. He also served as town clerk and town treasurer for most of the time they lived there. He died in Grass Lake on 10 March 1839. [1]
