Marriage

  • Several recordings Sarah's marriage to Robert Ford have been found. All indicate their marriage was soleminized by Matthew Merrium Paster of the Second Church of Berwick and recorded in Berwick, Maine. It appears to be a transcriptions error.
-26 Dec 1875 is recorded in at least 2 and possibly 3 different times with the review of the clerk of Berwick. There is a direct transcription from churches records as well.[1] [2] [3]
-26 Dec 1766 is the second date found from a different direct transcription of church records.[4] [5]
-Their oldest known child Hannah Ford is reported to have been born on 14 Sep 1766. So it might be assumed the early date is correct. However, no birth record has been for Hannah.[6]

Research Notes

  • Birth Record is required. Confirmation of birth place, date and parents names is needed.
  • There are records that indicate husband Robert Ford's brother Caleb Ford I's first wife was also named Sarah Abbott. A Caleb Ford and a Sarah Abbott were married also in the 2nd Church of Berwick by Matthew Merrium on 14 Jun 1777 which is 6 - 18 months after this Sarah married Robert Ford.[9] Howerver, Sarah's records indicate that was the wife of Robert Ford at the time of her death.[7] Caleb Ford I married for a second time on 9 May 1791 to Rachel Quint in Berwick, Maine where they both were residing. The marriage was solemized by Elder Nathaniel Lord.[10] Neither Caleb Ford nor Rachel (Quint) Ford are buried in the same cemetery as Sarah (Abbott) and Robert Ford. Rachel Ford's burial place as not been found. Caleb Ford is buried in a plot with only two known graves and no record has been found to indicate who the other person is in relationship to Caleb. [11]
  • Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820, when it voted to secede from Massachusetts. North Berwick was incorporated and set off from Berwick in 1831. It is not unusual for documents for this area to be recorded in the State of Maine. It is also common for death records to reflect a birth place of North Berwick which would have been legally Berwick at the time of birth.[12] [13]
