Biography

Emily Abbott was born in Halstock, Dorset, England about September 1843, and christened on 8 Oct 1843 in Halstock. Her parents were Richard and Emily Abbott.^[1][2]

In the 1851, 1861 and 1871 England census, she was living with her parents and siblings in Halstock. As of the 1871 census, her mother had died and Emily stepped in to help with her young siblings - at age 24 her occupation was listed as "manage for the family".^[3] Her father died in 1872.

In the 1881 census, Emily Abbott (born about 1847 in Halstock) was living in Bridport, Dorset. She was an unmarried charwoman, with children Francis (14), Herbert (11), Escott (7) and Beatrice (3).^[4] (According to family lore, she had a son Frank "by the son of the town squire", and she later married.^[5])

In the 1891 England census, Emily Abbott (born about 1845 in Halstock) was living in Bridport, Dorset. She was listed as widowed, working as a charwoman, with two children, Escot Abbott (16) born in Halstock, and Beatrice Abbott (13) born in Beaminster. Her children were also working, Escot as a general labourer and Beatrice as a nursemaid. They had a boarder, James Sibley.^[6]

In the April 1901 England census, Emily Abbott (born about 1845 in Halstock) was a lodger, living in Bridport St Mary, Dorset, in the house of James Sibley.^[7]

In 1911, Emily Sibley (born about 1847 in Halstock) was widowed. She was living in Dorchester, and was renting rooms for occupation.^[9]

Emily Sibley died in 1917; her death was registered in March 1917 in Dorchester, Dorset, England. She was 73 years old (born about 1844).^[10]
