Biography

Laurents was born and baptized June 12, 1650 at Geffen, near Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He was named for his grandfather and great-grandfather. He was married August 3, 1679 at the Reformed Dutch church in Bergen, New Jersey (now Jersey City) to Geertje Egberts of New Albany, New York.

Lawrence was 12 years old upon arrival at new Amsterdam. At 18 he moved to Fordham, just north of the city, and rented a farm from Jan Archer. The lease is dated August 31, 1668. By 1679 he moved to Bergen, New Jersey where he married Geertje Egberts. They were married by R. Van Gieszen who was Voorleezer of the church(pre lector or reader) in the presence of the court. This was considered quite an honor in those days. On April 2, 1679 Laurents joined the Bergen, New Jersey Dutch Reformed Church, Geertje Egberts soon followed and joined the church on June 23, 1679. One of the New Jersey Patentees, Jacques La Roue and Laurents Ackerman paid quit rents on a tract of land, 300 acres at Tappan, New York in 1683, in the years of 1680–1683. In 1689 he purchased a large tract of land in Bergen County, New Jersey starting near Little Ferry, extending from the Hackensack River to the Saddle River. The old homestead was at Polifly, near what is now called Woodbridge, New Jersey, "a little east of the main road, and under the brow of the hill.". It was torn down many years ago and in 1915 the only thing left to mark the spot where it once stood, was an old well and a few straggling stones and bricks. This property was bought from John Berry, for 75 pounds current money of the Province of East New Jersey, royalties excepted, with an annual payment of 19 shillings forever, on 25 day March of each and every year, as quit claim rent, current moneys of this province for 75 pounds current money of the province of East New Jersey. The deed for the above is dated March 10, 1689, the boundary as follows: "lying and being between the Hackensack and Saddle Rivers, now in the possession of said Laurents Ackerman, containing in breath upon said Hackensack River nine chains and sixty links to run from thence along the bounds of Garret Van Dien on a west northwest course until it comes over the fresh Meadows on the northern side thereof and from thence Northwest onto the Saddle River along the bounds of said Garrett Van Dien and from that said bounds to run 17 chains in a straight line along saddle River on a Southwest course on a straight line into the bounds of Abraham Ackerman. The same to run the breadth aforesaid in a South East course and to the north west side of the aforesaid fresh Meadows and from thence east south east all along between the bounds of Garrett Van Dien and Abraham Ackerman unto the river Hackensack, except where the same butts and comes to the bounds of David Provst and Harmon Bras where the said Laurents Ackerman found is too in for their breath containing in all of upland and Meadow 295 acres English measure. "

He passed away in 1707.[1]

Ackerman-1501 and Ackerman-116 appear to represent the same person because: Added mistakenly
Ackerman-1147 and Ackerman-116 do not represent the same person because: I am sorry but I do not believe these are the same person. Ackerman-1147 died in 1640 while Ackerman-116 died in 1707.
Ackerman-1147 and Ackerman-116 appear to represent the same person because: Of dates and information. The correct spelling is Laurents, although Laurens and Laurence are possible spellings. Granddaughter of Ackerman, – 116. Thanks, Karen – 1207
