Biography

David Ackerman was born about 1615 in Oss, Noord Brabant, Holland. His surname is of Germanic origin, probably Flemish. His ancestors may have been from the Antwerp area and may have headed north to escape Spanish persecution of the Protestants. ( citations needed)

David Ackerman later moved to Den Bosch until 1646 or 1647, then moved to Geffen. He was probably involved in the military in some form, as his marriage in Den Bosch in 1642 to Elisbeth Bellier was listed in military records. He worked as a voorleser in Geffen, a county clerk.

In 1654 or 1655, he bought a farm in Berlicum with his mother and two brothers, Pieter and Henrick, and continued as a voorleser and teacher in Berlicum [1][2]. However, Protestants were not allowed to sell their produce because Catholics controlled the region. This was probably a factor in the Ackermans emigration to the United States, as he was otherwise a prominent citizen. He was probably recruited by the Dutch Reformed Church on behalf of the Amsterdam Chapter of the West India Company. There was a shortage of ministers in New Netherland, and thus a high demand for voorlesers.

It seems that he died shortly after arriving. He was certainly not living on January 6, 1683 when his eldest daughter Anneken joined the New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church.

There appears a conflict with the date of arrival in the colonies. Under the ARRIVAL section you state he arrived in New Amsterdam aboard the "De Vos' on August 31, 1662. At the same time, you mention the in the BIOGRAPHY it is stated that he departed Amsterdam on 2 September 1662, arriving in New Amsterdam on 14 November 1662. Need to know which date is correct.

Under RESEARCH NOTES you have the statement "Married Antjen Hoppe, baptized February 28, 1714. Daughter of Jan Hoppe and Rachel Terhuyn (Terhune)." This is unlikely since he was dead. Please specify whose marriage you are talking about.

Hi, Arthur.

Thank you for pointing out that discrepancy. I don't know who you thought you were addressing when you refer to "YOU," as this profile is currently managed primarily by "us" (that is, the Project), and all of "us" are entitled (and encouraged) to correct errors. (This profile is protected because of a history of conflicts over David's LNAB or family connections. Those aspects of the profile are the only elements that are affected by project protection. The body of the profile can be freely edited -- and the quality of project profiles will suffer if members don't edit them.)

You are welcome to check the sources cited, and correct the profile if you find errors (or revise the profile to point out that you have found unresolved discrepancies between different records).

In this instance, regarding the ship, there seems to be only one record of a sailing of De Vos in 1662. That sailing, with the whole Ackerman family on board, looks to me like the correct one to report in this profile. NO SOURCES are mentioned for the erroneous claim that the ship sailed on September 2, 1662 and arrived in New Amsterdam on November 14, 1662, so it looks like there's a good basis for deleting that claim. It turns out that the error was introduced to WikiTree in 2012 when the "fact" was imported as part of one of several duplicate profiles that were later merged to create this one. Please delete the bad information and give yourself a pat on the back for finding an error that was overlooked for 12 years!

As for the bad marriage, if I would you I would preface that research note with a statement like "The following text that was found in this profile appears to be about some other person."

I am sorry if I may offended anyone by using "YOU". I was referring to the "Project" membership, no one individual. Perhaps I could have written it differently, but no offense is meant. I will return to the profile soon and make any correction or comments. Thank you for responding so rapidly.

David Ackerman the school teacher cited in 1563 about his income. This David was born 1613. Grandfather? Or a typo?

Removing Elizabeth Ackerman-325 and merging her with Elizabeth Bellier-1. She was assumed as a child from what is actually her mother's second marriage record but David only immigrated with 6 children, the rest being accounted for.

Ackerman-128 and Ackerman-26 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!
