Robert Watts Handy, Civil Bend: Legend of Reality (Wilmington, DE: Authors Choice Press, 2000). Rec. Date: Mar 1, 2015. p. 10 -11 (excerpted below):
'"By early spring 1840 more Euro-American pioneers had arrived to settle Minnesota Territory which two years later would become Iowa Territory (present Fremont County, Iowa). Among them were John and Cynthia Acord, son John, age one, and John's grandmother Rachel Combs Acord, age sixty-nine years. Rachel, born 1 January 1768 was the daughter of Job and Deborah Combs of Powels Fort Valley, Shenandoah County, Virginia. She had been reared with brothers Zur Job, John, and sisters Lacey and Deborah. On 12 August 1788 she married John Eckert Acord who was the son of a Pennsylvania Dutch family.....In 1829, the Acord family moved to Decatur Township, Lawrence County, Ohio where John died in 1835. His widow resided with her sons....in Delaware County, Indiana....A year later, Jacob and Cynthia Acord, with infant John and grandmother Rachel, left Indiana to farm in Osage County, Missouri....on the last day of March 1840 (the seekers arrived ) (two miles north of present day Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa...At age 85 years Grandmother Rachel died in 1856. Her granson Jacob met the same fate while farming on 18 November of the same year. He was thirty-four years old. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rachel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rachel:
Combs-2835 and Combs-94 appear to represent the same person because: Too little information on Combs-2835 to find similarities other than name and daughter Sarah (Sally) Acord. Sarah Acord, daughter of Combs-94 did have a second spouse named Ellison Christian. Thus, no reason not to merge. Also need to merge the two Sarah Acords....
Note that the Robert Watts Handy book entitled Civil Bend gives Rachel Comb's birthday as Jan 1, 1768 and her death in 1856. He also lists another son, Ellison and a daughter, Mahalia but doesn't include daughter Katherine or son James Henry. It is possible that James Henry is also Ellison and that Katherine is also Mahalia.
