Biography

Eliphalet Adams had been born in New England. In 1798, he had decided to move to the Eastern Townships in Lower Canada, settling in the Westbury area northeast of present-day Sherbrooke. The reference to the ferry in Prince Edward County, Ontario c follows: A future ferry owner, Eliphalet Adams born at Cheshire, New Hampshire in 1775 and a relative of American President John Quincy Adams, built up a thriving lumbering and building business out of Picton and began buying land at Van Alstine’s Mills. Adams bought parcels of land between 1807 and 1814 from Loyalist pioneer Matthew Steel, William Moore and David Rattan in lots 7 and 8 west of the ferry landing and began to build a tavern and hotel on this property. This building may be the present white house or former Stage and Ferry Hotel at the lip of the hill before going down to the present ferry docks.

On January 20, 1812, Eliphalet Adams petitioned the Court of the Quarter Sessions being held at Adolphustown for a licence to operate a ferry from Marysburgh above Van Alstine’s Mills to Dorland’s Point.[23] Adams was attempting to fill the void of ferry service from Marysburgh with the abandonment of the e

ELEPHALET ADAMS

1775-1816. Lumber Merchant

Elephalet Adams was born in New Hampshire in the town of Ringe in the year 1775. In 1805 he emigrated to Canada settling in Picton. Here he married Mary Washburn. He operated a successful lumber business. In 1812 he built a lovely stone cottage on Bridge Street. He died in 1816.

Descendants of Eliphalet and Mary [Washburn] Adams by the Schooner Crew Eliphalet Adams (Samuel, Isaac, Isaac) was born February 10, 1775 in Rindge, New Hampshire, and died October 24, 1816 in Upper Canada of pneumonia. He married Mary Washburn January 15, 1805 in Hallowell Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada, daughter of Ebenezer Washburn and Sarah Deforest. She was born April 29, 1787 in Ernestown Twp., L&A Co., Upper Canada.

Eliphalet Adams arrived at Hallowell in 1805. He operated a lumbering business on Bridge St., Picton.

She married Lewis Minaker, (Meinecke) about 1829; born March 04, 1808 in Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., UC; died February 28, 1891; buried Cherry Vallet cemetery, Prince Edward Co.
  2. Lucy Adams, born 1806. She married Abraham Steel; born 1802;
  3. Daniel Adams, born 1807.
  4. Sarah Adams, born 1809; died 1881. She married John Murney; born 1803; died 1885.
  5. Eliza Adams, born 1817. She married John Thomas McCready; born 1811.

He died in Boston, suddenly while in attendance upon his duties as a member of the General Court from Suffield. He acquired a large property and was greatly esteemed. His will, dated 20 November 1717, is recorded both in Boston and at North Hampton, which was the county seat of Hampshire County - to which Suffield then belonged.
