Biography

Abraham Adams was born 14 Jun 1639 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts . He was a corporal in the militia 1685-1693 and became sergeant in 1703. He died in Newbury in 14 June 1714, aged 75.[1]

Soon after his death, Sept. 17, 1714, in the 13th year of Her Majesty's reign (Queen Anne) the children entered into and made the following: Agreement: We, the subscribers, children of our honored father, Abraham Adams, late of Newbury, deceased, do mutually agree upon and make the following division of said estate to and among ourselves, in full settlement thereof. Imprimis; Robert Adams, eldest son, is to enjoy all ye lands and buildings thereon in Newbury, called ye homestead, which lands were given by our honored grandfather, Robert Adams, late of Newbury, in his last will and testament and all ye lands lately laid out to ye freehold right of our said grandfather on the lower common in said town, and ye part of the wood lott belonging to said freehold and ye land thereunto belonging, and all land yt shall be laid out in Newbury to said right with all other profits and privileges belonging to said freehold, or yt shall hereafter redound thereto, and ye Tow-combs in ye garret of ye dwelling house for the 20 shillings given him in his father's will, to be ye said Robert's -the eldest son, paying to his two brothers, Abraham and Isaac, 20 lbs. apiece according to ye will of his said grandfather, - and all other payments appointed to him make.

  • Abraham is to enjoy for his part of said estate all ye land on which he dwells which was purchased of Mr. Samuel Sewall Esq with all profits and privileges ytunto belonging, and one-sixth part in all ye land in Haverhill except one-half of what was purchased of Peasley which is allotted for Isaac, and yt according to quantity and quality, and 24 lbs personal estate, whhch he has already received to his satisfaction, -the said Abraham engaging himself, and his heirs, executors and administrators to pay all debts due from said estate, and to receive all debts due to ye same.
  • Isaac Adams is to enjoy for his part ye piece of meadow or marsh land of Jackman's at Kent's Island in Newbury, and one- half of ye tract of land in quantity and quality bought of Peasley att Haverhill on ye southerly side, and 35 lbs. 14 shillings personal estate, in hand received to his full satisfaction, and one-sixth part of land in Haverhill.
  • John Adams is to enjoy for his portion of said estate, 94 lbs. personal estate, in hand received to his full satisfaction, and one- sixth part of land att Haverhill, except one- half of what was purchased of Peasley.
  • Matthew Adams is to have and hold for his part of said estate ye rate bit lying on ye upper woods, one- quarter part of ye marsh on Plum Island in quantity and quality, and one-sixth of ye land att Haverhill, except one- half of what was purchased of Peasley and 24 lbs. in moveables * * *
  • Israel Adams is to hold etc * * ye two acres and a half of land and orchard which Matthew Adams dwelt on, at the date hereof, bought of John Poor, and one- half quarter of ye marsh land at Plum Island and ye land lately laid out in the lower Common and ye rate-right with ye land belonging to it, and 29 lbs. 19 shillings in personal estate, in hand received to his full satisfaction, and one- sixth of ye land att Haverhill except etc; and 2 shillings rate- right purchased of Coffin etc. * * *
  • Richard Adams is to have, hold and enjoy for his part, ye tract of land purchased of Henry Lunt, and ye lott lying on ye flatts by Merrimac river, both freehold and rate- part, and one-fourth and half- fourth of marsh at Plum Island, and one-half of ye wood lott belonging to the rate right etc * * * ye piece of marsh land bought of Mr. Titcomb at Salisbury, and one-eighth of land at Haverhill except, etc..and 24 lbs. in personal estate.

Mary Adams m. George Thurlow (Thorla)

Robert Adams m. Rebecca Knight. He was a yeoman, resided in Newbury, near Newburyport. His will, made Oct. 1, 1765, was proved Aug. 25, 1769. In it he mentions his son John as unmarried, his granddaughter Sarah, wife of Nathaniel Atkinson, his daughter Mary Merrill, granddaughter Mary Creasy, grandsons Jacob and Zebulon, and sons Abraham and Robert.

Capt. Abraham Adams married Anne Longfellow, daughter of William and Anne (Sewall) Longfellow. William was the ancestor of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Abraham began life as a sailor, and became a sea-captain. He made numerous voyages to the West Indies and to England. His father gave him a farm above the falls in Byfield, now "Highfields," and he built there the house which was later the home of George W. Adams. "In it are the original deeds of the estate and two chairs which were brought to her new home by the bride. Many other relics - desks, tables, spinning wheels, chairs, warming pans, china, pewter, a tall clock, a sword, used in the battle of Bunker Hill, the diary of Josiah Adams, silhouettes of colonial men and maids, are among the treasures of the house." Capt. Abraham became a successful farmer, and died in Byfield at the age of 86.

Isaac Adams married Hannah Spofford of Rowley, Mass. He began life as a weaver, but became a farmer. He resided in Rowley, and died there at age 96. His will was made Jan. 24, 1737, proved Mar. 27, 1738. He had purchased a farm in Boxford in 1716, to which his widow removed after his death.

Sarah Adams m. John Hutchinson of Andover, Mass. She settled in Andover and died there.

John Adams married Elizabeth Noyes who died childless. He married second Sarah Pearson. He was a farmer; lived in Rowley, now Georgetown, Mass., on the north side of Pentucket Pond. His will was made Nov. 25, 1746, and mentions wife Sarah, daughter Sarah Hazen, daughter Elizabeth Hardy, and children Hannah and John.

Dr. Matthew Adams m. Sarah Knight. He is said to have been at first a cordwainer, then a farmer in Byfield Parish, and to have been the first practicing physician in West Newbury after 1726. His will was made Aug. 3, 1753 and proved Dec. 8, 1755

Israel Adams m. Rebecca Atkinson and died a few months later leaving no issue.

Dorothy Adams died 1715 unmarried.

Richard Adams m. Susanna Pike, daughter of John and Lydia Pike. He was a husbandman in Newbury, and died in Newburyport at the age of 84. His will was made Aug. 2, 1770 and proved Nov. 2, 1778. He names his daughter Mary, grandson Nathaniel, son of Enoch, granddaughter Hannah, the daughter of Daniel, late of Newburyport, and sons John, Moses, Edmund and Richard.

  • Mmary Thurlow is to have 5 lbs. in hand with what she formerly recieved.
  • Sarah Adams to have 80 lbs. and as money out of moveable part about 40 lbs. in full.
  • Dorothy Adams to have 80 lbs. personal estate and about 18 lbs. additional.

have found two different marriage records for Abraham and Mary (Pettengill) Adams. One has date of 16 Nov 1670, the other is 10 Nov 1670 both these records were found on https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LVTH-XJP
