Biography

John Adams was born about 1555 in Barton St. David, Somerset, England, son of Henry Adams (~1531 - 1596) and Rose Alice (Stebbing) Adams (~1536 - ~1598).[1]

John married Agnes Stone (~1555 - ~1616)[2] on 1 Feb 1575 in Barton St. David. Their children were:

  1. Thomas Adams (1576 - <1600)[3]
  2. John Adams (1577 - 1609)
  3. Elizabeth Adams (1579 - )[4]
  4. Lucy (Adams) French (abt.1574-bef.1605)
  5. Margaret (Adams) Warfield (~1579 - 1650)[5]
  6. Rose Adams (1581 - )
  7. Henry Adams (1583 - 1646).

John died on 22 Mar 1604, aged ~48, and was buried in Barton St David, South Somerset District, Somerset, England.[6][1]

Research Notes

John Adams was a husbandman. The earliest record of him was in 1596 when he was named as administrator of his father's estate. On May 27, 1597, he became bondsman for Agnes, widow of John Stone of Barton St. David, Somerset, England, executrix of the will of her late husband.[7] John Adam's wife was also named Agnes, so John may have become the surity for his mother-in-law, a common occurrance. Parish records prior to 1704, do not exist in Barton St. David, Somerset County, England. Some transcripts were found in Wells for 1598,1603,1606, 1608, 1611, 1612, 1615, 1617, 1622, 1623, 1629, 1634 and 1638, but they contain few Adams entries. [8]

The source currently attached for the alleged son named Thomas actually says that a John Addames had a son named Thomas Addames who was baptized on 16 Feb 1583 in Steyning, Sussex, England.

Will

  • Summary of the will of John Adams,[8] written on March 19, 1603/4, three days before his burial:
  1. To Roger and Judth Warfield, children of Roger Warfield (son-in-law) of Charleton Mackrell, Somerset.
  2. To John, Stephen, and Mary French, children of Richard French (son-in-law) of Misterton, Somerset.
  3. To Katheren Adams, dau of John Adams (jr) of Misterton, Somerset.
  4. To son, John and his children, John and Katerene.
  5. Named as executors wife Agnes Adames and son Henry Adames.
  • Note: Son John was left 20 pounds to be paid after four years, if at that time time he was providing for himself and his children. If not, he shall receive ten pounds and ten should go to his children.
  • In the Diocesan Records there is a bond for administration for this estate by widow Agnes dated 7 August 1605. She was buried twelve years later in the churchyard at Barton St. David, 15 January 1615/16. [1025]
  • His will was exhibited 26 June 1609, by Roger Warfield of Charlton Adam, who was made guardian of the testator's grandchildren (children of his son John), John and Katherene.

(Wells Probate Registry, bundle for 1609, no. 2.)
Notes:[8]

While on his death-bed and only three days before his burial, which took place on 22 March 1603/4, John Adams had his will drawn up, apparently completely; but it was neither signed nor witnessed; possibly he expired suddenly before these acts could be performed. Furthermore, the will was not brought before the ecclesiastical probate court until over five years after he died, and it was never registered. The original document is preserved in the Probate Registry at Wells, being no. 2 in the bundle for 1609, and a complete verbatim copy of the document is herewith appended:.
"In the name of the father and of the sonn and of the holie ghost amen. The XlXth day of March in the yeare of or Lord God One Thousand six hundred and three [ 1603/4]. I'm with Bobbie: Barton St. David parish records are not extant prior to 1714, and the earliest year of its bishop's transcripts is 1598. It appears that the marriage data for John and Agnes (Stone) Adams is an invention. The list of children, moreover, contains four for whose existence there is no confirmation of which I'm aware. John Adams's will identifies two sons (John and Henry) and two presumed sons-in-law (Roger Warfield and Richard French), whose wives are unidentified in either the will or the genealogy in which it and this Adams family's genealogy were first and most authoritatively presented (see J. Gardner Bartlett, _Henry Adams of Somersetshire, England, and Braintree, Mass._ [New York, 1927], 41, 46). It turns out that one of these two Adams daughters—she who married Richard French—was named Lucy (not Judith Lucy and not Mary), whose burial is recorded in both Misterton and adjacent Crewkerne, Somerset, as having occurred on 29 March 1605 ("Luce, wife of Richard French"). For further details concerning the wives (and certain children) of Richard French, see my comment at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/French-333.

I find no source to prove the marriage date & place. Neither of the secondary sources cited give this date. Would someone with better English record hunting skills be able to see if there is indeed a marriage recorded in Barton St. David in 1575? If the search is fruitless, the marriage date & location should probably be removed.

BTW, in my recent edits of this profile I removed an incorrect and unsourced list of children. See the changes tab if interested.

Please take the time to provide more detail about the sources with which you have worked. those you believe support your claims.

Quite a few of the profile recently added and most duplicates, list a group of massive record collections--"England Birth, England Marriage, England Death," globally, just like this profile does. This is one step removed from listing "FamilySearch" or "Ancestry.com."

Provide enough information details so that other collaborators are able to find the information with which you worked. --Gene

All of these profiles are already on Wikitree and need to be merged. I have double checked every profile and was able to find the original with a Google search and it popped up on my GED.com match duplicate as it will for anyone else who is a direct descendant and has him in their charts.

I know it may be frustrating to see these proposals but if you have any questions please message me or the person who greeted you on your home page as I'm sure they can quickly point to the profile creation process and how to best ensure it isn't a duplicate...Wikitree isn't like Ancestry.com where everyone has their own trees, rather, it is a collaborative effort to make one unified tree- otherwise I wouldn't have spent my night proposing these merges in order to prevent confusion to each new member/researcher that finds two versions of the same person etc

Adams-56734 and Adams-253 appear to represent the same person because: If you happened to see the proposals for the father, mother, grandparents, spouse, children then thi is the same- no idea how Adams-56734 didn't match to Adams-253 on an upload or even a Google search as they're identical.

Adams-28848 and Adams-253 appear to represent the same person because: Similar dates of birth and death, similar locations. One son will require an additional merge.

It's generally a good idea, especially if a profile has a lot of managers, to respond by sharing your own thoughts and then give others an opportunity to reply (wait a couple days), and then make a change if nobody disagrees.

What is one supposed to do when you change something that one person suggests (which seemed correct to me) and then another person comes in and says it's a wrong decision?

I'm tired of trying to accomodate people to only be told that I'm wrong. So who decides?

There is no evidence that Rose was Henry's wife, although it is a plausible supposition. However, we don't know how many wives Henry had, and there is no reason to think that Rose was John's mother.
posted by [Living Schmeeckle]
His (Adams-253) mother's name is listed as unknown, but if you go to Henry (his father) his wife is listed as Rose and their son is John, with the link to here. Is that just an oversight or is there something that needs to be cleared up? Thank you!
Adams-16388 and Adams-253 appear to represent the same person because: appears to be the same man.
