Walter was born and raised in Pittsview, Alabama.

He enlisted in the U.S. military service on 12-4-1918. Walter was killed while on guard duty, and is supposed to have been knocked from a trestle by a passing train. He had been on duty and was found by his relief.
Walter was buried in Pittsview cemetery with military honors.
