Research Note

Several sources state James Adams' death was in Hancock, Georgia. His LWT stated he was living in Hancock, Georgia, 1796, owning several tracts of land naming Buffalo Creek as one property given to children in his will. He gave the home plantation "I now live on" to his wife Mary, and also part of his land "I now live on" to sons James and Robert. He owned much property he conveyed by his will to his children. Hancock County was formed upon an Act of Legislature December 17, 1793, out of a part of the counties of Washington and Greene, at which time James Adams and others were named Commissioners of the newly formed county of Hancock. One of the early settlers of Hancock County was one Jonathan Adams, likely the son of James Adams also of Hancock County.[2] Buffalo Creek flows near Milledgeville and Sparta in Hancock County.[3]

"Find a Grave" has identified a headstone listed in cemetery at Woodstock, Cherokee, Georgia, as being that of James Adams of Hancock Georgia buried at Cherokee County, Georgia. His FAG Headstone shows name "Adams, PVT, SC Regt. Rev War" Biography stated he was living in Greene, Georgia, 1790.[4] This burial location is 140 miles away from his land and property listed in his Last Will and Testament where James Adams stated he lived, died there and his will was probated in Hancock, Georgia. This biography at "Find a Grave" clearly stated the James Adams was one and the same that was listed in the Georgia Tax Index, 1789-1799 in the year 1794 in Hancock County. Biography also stated James Adams was buried at Cold Water Cem, Location nr Cold Water Ch, Elbert Co GA 34 as printed in "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots; Volume: 1..." this online source listed "grave marker, Cold Water Cem, Elbert, GA, with marker"[5]

But Find a Grave has listed a different Sgt James Adams, Jr. for the Coldwater Cemetery, Elbert, GA, with headstone Marker with Rev War service in Virginia.[6] This Sgt James Adams Jr. of Virginia has a Revolutionary War application photo at Find a Grave, S16306. Upon review his application stated his Virginia Revolutionary War military service. Furthermore after the war James Adams and family members migrated 1799 to Elbert County, Georgia still living there 18 Oct 1832 when he applied for a service pension.[7] The Cold Water Cem, Elbert, GA, James Adams was grandson of Robert Adams and Mourning Lewis of Virginia.[8] For further data see his WikiTree profile, James Allen Adams Jr.[9]

This Find a Grave research clarification does not match the historical data for the James Adams who owned and lived on his property in Hancock County, Georgia, upon the county formation in 1793 being named Commissioner of Hancock County, and still living there at the time he wrote his will which was probated 21 July 1796 in Hancock, Georgia.

I have done a bit of looking and believe that this profile has combined information on TWO men, one James Adams from Lancaster SC who died in Hancock GA and a second James Clayton Adams who died in Cherokee GA. The son, James Clayton Adams, Jr. Does NOT belong to James who d. Hancock. James, Jr. Of the Hancock will has a totally different family.

Any idea how BOTH James, Sr. and Mary Montgomery acquired MIDDLE NAMES??? Something must be wrong with this profile. I have researched this family since the early 90s and have never seen any indication of other than JAMES, SR. and MARY MONTGOMERY, although most researchers believe that Mary was generally called Molsey as she has a granddaughter receded to as Molsey Montgomery.

I descend from Permelia Adams, daughter of James Adams, Jr.

Adams-22705 and Adams-17995 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent same person, birth and death year, location same, same wife, and father was David Adams.

I cannot access Adams-22705.

Adams-17995 must be a combined profile of two unrelated individuals.

I have years of research notes on James Adams of Hancock GA and his wife, thought to be, Mary Montgomery.

I descend from their son, James, Jr. and Martha Sledge.
