Biography

He was born 1707 in Newbury Massachusetts, the son of Sarah Adams and was called “Benoni” [Hebrew for " son of my Sorrow"] in early life. He became a cordwainer (shoemaker) in Andover, MA.

This account of the birth of Israel is received by the author from an old record in the possession of Julia Spofford of W. Boxford, MA one of the descendants. It has been published in the Essex Antiquarian Vol 2, 1898.

Birth: unknown Andover Essex County Massachusetts, USA Death: Oct. 16, 1789 Rindge Cheshire County New Hampshire, USA

Irael Adams and his wife Tabitha came from Andover, MA, to Rindge, NH in the year 1772. He was a signatory of the "Association Test" in Rindge in 1776. He died October 16, 1789. Little more information appears in the Rindge records about Israel and Tabitha. Grave marker showing age at death as 73 years, This may be an error, probable age is 83. His wife Tabitha died February 18, 1804, aged 97. Their son Isael Adams Jr also came to Rindge in 1772.

MILITARY: He was a soldier in the French and Indian War. Israel Adams petitioned, 30 March 1756, showing that “he had a son who, on his return from Lake George to the Thirtieth day of March Instant, his son hath been incapacitated for any business & continued in a weak state of heath.” Etc. Israel and wife, Tabitha, removed from Andover, MA to Rindge, NH in the year 1772. He died 16 October 1789, aged 73, and his widow died 18 February 1804, aged 97. These dates are thus upon their headstones.

note

Tabitha FARNEM b. Andover, MA 1706; d Rindge, NH Feb 18 1804, age 97. She married Andover Mar 20 1733 Israel ADAMS, b Newbury, MA Feb 24 1708 whose parentage is disputed. In one instance he is considered the son of single woman Sarah Adams, who m 28 Jan 1715, John Hutchinson of Andover, MA.In another account he is the son of Abraham Olney Adams and Hannah La Grasse, daughter of Donald La Grasse of Drumlanrig, Scotland, and that Israel was born Quincy, MA, 1706, removed Keene, NH, thence to Andover and Littleton, MA, finally to Rindge, NH where he died 16 Oct 1789, age 83. According to the Essed Antiquarian, Israel first married 1726, Mercy Holdridge of Stonington, CT, and that he married 3rd, Polly White of Providence, RI. This is questionnable, considering he would have been 96 years of age.
