Llewelyn Sherman Adams was born on January 8, 1899 in East Dover, Windham County, Vermont, USA. He was the son of Clyde Henry Adams (1875–1966) and Winnie Sherman Adams (1876–1960).

He graduated from Dartmouth College, receiving his BA. Sherm was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Sherman moved to Lincoln, New Hampshire where he began his love for politics and went into the lumber-paper business.

He served with the United States Marine Corps during World War I as a Private.

Sherm married Rachel Leona White in 1923. They had four children; Samuel, Jean, Sarah, and Marion Adams.

Sherman became co-owner of what is now one of New England's most popular ski destinations, Loon Mountain Ski Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

Sherman Adams was on the cover of TIME Magazine, January 9, 1956 and June 30, 1958.

He was the 67th Governor of New Hampshire (1948) and 2nd White House Chief of Staff for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, from 1953-1958.

Sherman resigned as Chief of Staff for President Dwight D Eisenhower for allegedly receiving an oriental rug and fur coat from a Boston textiles manufacturer who had business with the United States Government.

In 1961, Sherman Adams wrote "Firsthand Report: The Story of the Eisenhower Administration".

He died on October 27, 1986 in Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA from respiratory arrest and renal failure at 87 years old.
