Biography

Sophia was reportedly born in 1797. There is another Sophia Adams in the family, born in 1800. Did this Sophia die as a young child and the next child also named Sophia?

SOPHIA ADAMS COLVIN IRVIN married first Lewis Colvin in 1813 and they had several children. Lewis died in 1841, aged 59, leaving Sophia with several young children.

She married second John Irvin, a widower, on June 9, 1842 in Lewis Kentucky, according to Kentucky Marriage Records, 1783-1965. He was twenty years older. On the 1850 Census for Lewis, Kentucky, John age 73, a cooper, born in Pennsylvania and Sophia, age 53, born in Kentucky, are listed with Harriet A Colvin age 14. Households on the same page list James Irwin age 29 and family and William Irwin age 36 and family, probably sons of John Irwin from his first marriage. On the 1860 census, a 16 year old named Ann Aills Irvin was living with them, perhaps a granddaughter. At the time of this census, John was 83 and Sophia was 64. By 1870, John had died and Sophia was living beside the household of his son, William Irwin, farmer age 52 and his family, and beside Sophia and Lewis Colvin’s son Francis M COLVIn, farmer age 34 and his family. This census lists Sophia’s age as 76 and birthplace Ohio. On Mar 10, 1886 Sophia made a pension application as the widow of Lewis COLVIn for his service in the War of 1812.

I have not been able to verify that this Sophia Adams Colvin Irvin was the daughter of John James Adams and Susannah Moore Adams. On the Findagrave record #28326526 and the1850 Green, Ohio census which lists John and Susannah Adams' children, their daughter is shown as Sophia Adams England (1817-1864) who was married to Henry England (1814-1889) which indicates a different person than Sophia Adams Colvin Irvin (1797-1881). I have not been able to find alternate parents for Sophia Adams Colvin Irvin. However, her first husband Lewis Colvin's father was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1774 which is also where John James Adams (1766-1829) was born so it is possible there was a connection of some kind.
