Biography

CHARLES ADAMS SR. 1711-1771 Charles Adams was born about 1711, but we are not certain where. He came first to what was then Rowan County, North Carolina around 1750. When the Adams families came to Wilkes County, they settled on several different streams - the Mulberry, the Roaring and the Reddies River. The family of Charles Adams Sr. came to the Reddies River and settled on what was later referred to as the Adams Branch, a small tributary of the Reddies River. His wife's name is not known. His property was on the Reddies River a decade before Wilkes County was formed from Surry County and Charles' descendants are found, generally speaking living along the Reddies River. Charles and his wife had five children:

  1. Charles Jr. (Born 1747),
  2. William (Born 1751),
  3. Henry (Born 1752),
  4. Elizabeth (Born 1758),
  5. Spencer (Born 1760), and
  6. Margaret Peggy (Born 1761).

All or most of the children were born in Rowan County, NC. Charles appears for the first and last time on the 1771 tax list for what was then Surry County, North Carolina. He would have been about 60 years old and eligible for exemption from taxation about that time and several family tree tracers (see 975.682 D3g, 975.682 H2h& 975.682 H2a) have assumed he is the same Charles Adams who appears on subsequent tax lists. However, there is sufficient evidence in North Carolina records to indicate his death to be about 1771.

Adams-23806 and Adams-24387 appear to represent the same person because: These represent the same Charles Adams. I will add the unique biographical information to 24387.

I believe this is actually Charles Parkingham Adams (note the similarity in birthdates and death dates). Plus, Charles Sr. was the father of Charles Jr. (https://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hagerj&id=I85790), who was Henry's brother.
